Pope John Paul II is probably more responsible for the fall of Communism than any other single person. He worked very hard to improve the lives of millions the world over. He will never be forgotten.

People need to know that somebody on the outside supports them if they are going to do something revolutionary and dangerous. Without that support it is very hard to hold on to hope. People who were sitting on the fence were probably motivated and impassioned by the pope. You're right that it can't be measured or quantified, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.
