Deep Six Shuttle

Redirect their efforts to an unmanned-Mars lander [carrying] an unconditional note promising to pay the bearer $20 billion. Upon the successful Mars touchdown, NASA would publish a detailed map of the landing site--and then close.

I feel that continued space exploration is more than just important ... however, I can't argue with the logic of private sector competition!

I'll have you shut your mouth right now buddy. My dad raised us kids on money he made designing, updating and maintaining the SSME (Space Shuttle Main Engines for those not familiar) with Rockwell, Rocketdyne Division which is now Boeing and will soon be McDonnell-Douglas or somebody...

But I have to say I (and Dad) agree with you 100% about the state of NASA. A sorry state indeed.

Perhaps the 3 main concerns for space are 1) the problems of escaping the earths gravity well (one solution is the space elevator 2) human life support (solved if only robots are used) and 3) space vehicle propulsion (need something other that the current solid or liquid highly expendable fuels). Rentry is also a concern but is a collary of escape. New ideas are desperately needed and are not likely to progress very rapidly under NASA's space monopoly.
