I ran across your blog because I wanted to make a comparison between Gov. Perry of Texas and Mayor Bilandic. I actually think that comparison is more apt than President Bush and Mayor Bilandic –but I will not fault anyone who keeps Chicago’s colorful political history in the public eye!

There is no question that making the mostly black south side find alternate transportation was a factor in Bilandics’s loss. But all of those voters were not a lock. The loss came from those formerly loyal voters who shoveled for blocks to get their cars to lots that were supposed to have been plowed. The media had made repeated announcements urging people to move their cars to the lots. Those people are still angry

That, coupled with Bilandic facetiously asking reporters from Florida, “Snow, what snow? Do you see any snow?” was what done in him in.

Now we have the population of Galveston and Houston driving at one mile an hour for hours, fleeing certain death in slow motion and running out of gas. And many would have died in their cars had the storm come that way.

They have to listen to their Governor say over and over how swell the evacuation went. Saying will not make it so to them. He can only hope their electricity stays off and they don’t hear him say such things as:

“But the immediate and the ultimate goal of getting millions of
people out of the way of this storm has been achieved.”

They were only out of the way because Rita spun to the east. Maybe Rita will bring gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman the same success that the snow brought Mayor Byrne.

An interesting take on the Katrina disaster, as I vividly remember the snowstorms of which the author writes (I am a native Chicago ex-pat). But as it is plainly obvious that this website is, indeed, a right-wing nuthouse (some of the invective contained herein reminds me of pro-Nazi sarcasm in the 1930s), I would offer that the author is unwittingly verifying what the vast majority of the rest of the civilized world already knows: that Bush & his vile crew are just as corrupt and incompetent as the Bilandic MisAdministration in 1970s Chicago. I agree wholeheartedly!

Interesting article.

A couple problems, though.

First, the snowstorm of 1979 was hardly a once in a century event–a similar storm occured just 12 years earlier. We got twenty-three inches then, though there was no snow on the ground when that one started.

Second, the coordination of the snow removal was badly botched. You could see trucks parked all over the city, waiting for someone–anyone–to tell them what to do next. I was not alone in fighting my way out of a completely unplowed neighborhood only to see snowplows idling by the side of the road once I got to a major thoroughfare.

Oh, and Janey wasn’t unknown, she’d actually been the butt of Royko’s humor several times before she ran for mayor. Justly, judging by her performance as mayor.

A good story to consider while looking towards the future… but keep in mind that while there is a parallel for what the Media and the Bush Critics are doing, there is no parallel for what the Executive is doing: Bush had the stuff and people in place before the storm, and is handling the aftermath MUCH better than Bilandic did.

As the facts come out, the Pres will look fine, and his most outlandish critics will fade away, they won’t run for High Office on this issue. The Mayor and Governor… well, they may not look so good as time goes on.

THe delaay in the rescue had to be…..how else would controll such a large city of people 50-100 thousand who were not in clined to move and were angery, but to PASSIFIEY them …. with a little food and water deperation, after a few days suddenly theey coperate….gee

It seems to me (as I’ve said elsewhere) that responsibility should start local and move outward. If the failure of the levee can’t reasonably be blamed on the mayor, the tardiness of the evacuation order and the fubar state of all the subsequent evacuations certainly can.

The president probably has less blame to shoulder than does Congress; after all they make and fund the laws.

It would have been a slam dunk for the Democrats 20 years ago. The redneck mayor of NO is already mouthing off.

Today we have FOX, talk radio and the blogs to get the truth out. Hannity is already making sure the big mouth mayor of NO gets national exposure.
