I was a baseball crazy little leaguer when Nellie Fox, Luis Aparicio, Billy Pierce, et al last won the American League pennant. I think they beat Cleveland the night they clinched the pennant as I listened on a large transistor radio. Obscene salaries, free agency and jerkwad players caused me to lose interest in the game about 10 years ago, but I may have to pay attention if the Pale Hose make it to the Championship Series. I'm a little hazy on this, but wasn't Hoyt Wilhelm one of the first White Sox closers?

Ever fickle, I have now switched my allegiance become a HUGE Cleveland fan, since it is already Mission Accomplished for the Yanks.

But I can't wait to see Jenks and Mariano settle this - then we will see what a closer looks like.

Here's hoping. As a career Cubs fan, I am sufficiently removed (175 miles south) not to succumb to the partisan rivalry that afflicts the Windy City.

I agree with you about closers' mentalities being more important than stuff. Look at Joe Borowski in 2003. He had a good slider and control, and that was it. Yet he was very successful as a closer. Having him get hurt ruined the 2004 season.

Having been a marginal Sox fan at times (South Side Hit Men) I will be pulling for them this year. Hey, if the Red Sox can do it, why not the Pale Hose?
