I questioned Tony about if the State Dept did something stupid like this... and if so why. And he referred me to some Michael Young pieces in Slate and the Wall Street Journal as well as in Hit and Run. No great revelations more than what you say above. I noted that the Daily Star link no longer works. You posted it at Hit and Run comments section.

HOWEVER -
Here I was talking about the Pali connection to the bombing. I have not seen THAT anywhere else and was wondering if and why not NONE of those other media sources (mentioned above) haven't.

Mike:

The Daily Star of Lebanon had a huge write up in its dead tree edition on the Mehlis report that they made available online in PDF format. When the report came out last Friday, no one else knew of the redacted names but them. This is the relevant quote from my piece in The American Thinker last Friday in which I quoted that PDF story:

One curious note is that there was an intervention at the last moment by the US State Department, who asked that a portion of the report be redacted. The Daily Star report linked above says that “Sources have stated that the uncensored report names the primary suspects in the crime as: Assef Shawkat, Syrian President Bashar Assad’s brother-in-law and head of Syrian intelligence; Bahjat Suleiman, a high ranking Syrian intelligence officer; Ghazi Kenaan, the former Syrian Interior Minister and commander of Syria’s intelligence apparatus in Lebanon between 1982 and 2002.”

The Star has taken that version down from their website. Perhaps it is cached somewhere.

The State Department may have seen the redaction as a club they could hold over the head of the Syrians to get them to yeild on infiltration in Iraq as well as other issues.

How come this is the only place I have heard of this?
Did Tony at Across the Bay, Michael Young, Lee Smith or anyone else (Washington Times?) note this fact?
