Let's see. The Jews never really had any big massacres. The Christians had the Inquisition, but that was centuries ago, and they've apologized for it repeatedly... though I grant you apologies don't bring the wrongfully killed back to life.

But Muslims and unbelievers have a LOT of deaths and human misery to their record. The unbelievers have the Holocaust, the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, the Gulag Archipelago, etcetera etcetera etcetera. As for Islam - all one has to do is look around at the world today and see how many problems that particular belief system has caused, and by "problems" I mean degrading and violent deaths.

So draw your own conclusions. You probably will anyway.

To me, the real mystery is why every single administration since the 1979 sacking of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran (and the holding of its staff as hostages for over a year) has essentially given Iran a free pass.

It might be that ever since the Carter administration, we've been hearing that "moderates" will come to power in Iran.

After 24+ years, those "moderates" are proving to be mighty elusive.

Considering the mullahs unabashed support for terrorism, and the covert export of arms and explosives to the terrorists in Iraq, (and now the development of nuclear weapons.) I still don't see Iran being held accountable in any meaningful way.

The Iranians are supporters of terrorism. Period.

I continue to be disappointed that no one in Washington seems to be acting accordingly.

I guess they'll still be waiting for those "Iranian moderates" when the mullahs test their nuclear device.

He makes a convenient straw man for secularists, and that’s it.

Exactly. I am a conservative Christian, and I can't ever remember hearing any of my friends, relations, neighbors, or acquaintances bring him up in the last ten years- except one, and he's an atheist who thought he was making a significant point.
The only other time I hear anything about him is when the media reports on some latest lunacy.

As a point of fact, had he lived in certain OT times he would have been executed a few years back for false prophecies in the Name of G-d. They took truth telling a lot more seriously. The punishment certainly seems harsh, but you have to admit, if the consequences for carelessly claiming to speak for God were more severe, more people would refrain from speaking their own wishful thinking as the Voice of God.

The Old Testament prophets would not have recognized Pat Robertson, because he does not speak with the authority of God. They would have recognized him for what he is, a man putting words in God's mouth.

Pat Robertson is a fringe figure, even in the evangelical community. I haven't heard any of the Christians I know say anything at all about him. Ever. That's how influential he is in the circles I travel in.

BTW, I am a fundamentalist. I believe in the inerrancy of the Bible (in it's original languages). I am also a scientist. My children attend public schools, and I have yet to infiltrate the library and burn everything on humanism and evolution. I would never vote for a religious leader for any elected office. That is not their calling. Pat Robertson's credentials for political punditry are questionable at best. When was the last time he said anything rational or useful having to do with politics? He makes a convenient straw man for secularists, and that's it.

Melanie,

Here's a homework problem for you. In the past century:

How many people have been executed by atheistic societies? Include Hitler, Communist China, Stalin and Soviet Union, Pol Pot, Castro, N. Korea, etc.

How many people have been executed by nominally Christian societies?

How many people have been executed by nominally Islamic societies?

How many have been executed by nominally Jewish societies?

Thanks for playing.

Oh really Melanie? I don't remember hearing about any Christian or Jewish group beheading anyone. Or sexually mutilating female sex organs for "chastity" sake. When was the last Christian or Jewish suicide bomber reported? Sure, there are hateful and stupid folks in all religions, but don't compare the violence and mahem brought to the world by radical Muslims with modern behavior from Jews and Christians. I don't see the moral equivalence. Besides, God said the root of ALL evil is the love of money.
