U.S.A.! U.S.A!

I love U.S.A. Soccer. Eddie Johnson in the win against Latvia last week. Photo from ussoccer.com. It's true. LOVE IT. LOVE IT. Which is not unusual, really. I'm all over the Olympics, and I adore college sports. Not much for

I've always loved soccer since I started playing as a kid. I "grew out" of it, as many in my generation did, but then I lived in England for several years and rediscovered the game. It's funny to hear my fellow American's now talk about the Super Bowl or World Series as "big" sporting events. The World Cup dwarfs them put together.

I'm really looking forward to watching the American team, which is probably the best ever. I hope we make a good showing.

If the Americans win the World Cup, it would be much bigger than the upset Hockey win over Russia, Canada, and the other world favorites. Besides, I don't have to have the USA win to watch this great event... It would be nice to see them place higher than - who? - though...

"Another contender is Great Britain."
My good lord, do you want me to call you a Yank?
Great Britain comprises of three footballing nations, all of which are able to qualify for the world cup, England, Scotland and Wales. In addition,Northern Ireland and also field a squad (being part of the United Kingdom).
As it is, England may have a chance, but expect us to go out in the quater or semi-finals.

I am from New York City but have a love for the game. You should know that the reference to Great Britain is not specific enough as England. If you've seen some of the commercials on ESPN they show a rousing group of Scots, "The Tartan Army" who would not care to be eliminated so readily.

You're very lucky to have seen Cryff. My only other point would be that the Kaiser, Franz Beckenbauer didn't seem to be missing anything from his game. In fact the Cosmos would often win the NASL championship, then go around the world on a global tour beating many of the world's best club teams.

It was a glorious time for the game here.

Now the big dance is almost upon us!

Great post. I became a soccer addict in the mid-90s about the time my daughter started to play. For me growing up, it was always The Big 3- baseball, basketball, football. While I still enjoy those sports somewhat, I'd rather watch a soccer game anytime. (I don't follow it professionally- until World Cup time.) It's a great sport and great entertainment. Thanks for the soccer props.

An aside- the only sports I can endure on TV are US Open Tennis, Masters and British Open golf and World Cup soccer. I can't even bear to watch the World Series or the Super Bowl. In light of this admission, I might as well vote for a damn socialist. I'm sure I'll be labeled Euro-Scum- wholly undeserved for a guy from the Midwest.

I just recently began watching world soccer (even though my English fiance despises it!) It all started with the FA Final, and then I was on the net searching for everything I could find on "MY" U.S.A. team!
Had a great time watching them go after Latvia. Favorite player so far is O'Brien, not for any playing reason necessarily, as I haven't watched enough to know. But I will, yes I will.
Sadly, I will miss the game against the Czechs because of work :o(

I don't watch during the year, except for my 11yr. old son's soccer games. But when the Olympics or World Cup roll around I'm there.
Kick some Czech butt!
