Great series. My wife and my father-in-law just got back from a eight day trip to Gettysburg hitting every historical market in the area related to the battle (my wife took over 600 photos on the trip.)

In the two weeks before the left, our we- my wife, father-in-law, and our kids (11 and 9) watched the movie Gettysburg(with Tom Berringer, Jeff Daniels, Martin Sheen- as Lee, etc.) about 10 times and read about 12 different books about the battle as well as the players in the battle.

Your writings are a great supplement to what we have already learned, and quite an enjoyable read. Thank you for putting it together.

I concur with Hector. Your anonymous author needs to start fisking the Copperheads.

And meanwhile, you might speculate about Lee’s state of mind. The last time he brought any troops up that far, somebody leaked his Special Order 191 to the Union - and the Rebs lost Antietam.

Gettysburg is sure to be a quagmire for the Union and they should pull out. President Lincoln has entered the war without enough troops and the horses do not have enough armor. Captured rebel troops have been illegally detained without the benefit of the legal representation and have not been charged with anything. Lincoln needs to be impeached.

(For realism sake, I thought that if you are going to blog about the war, you should have some sort of nonsensical rant from a “leftist”, defeatist idiot:)

You report George Armstrong Custer as being a newly minted general. There were two other cavalry officers who became general officers the same day as Custer. They were:
1. Wesley Merritt, promoted from captain, who had been commmanding the Reserve Brigade of the 1st Division, Army of the Potomac since Chancellorsville.
2. Elon Farnsworth, promoted from captain, and given command of the 1st Brigade of the 3d Division, Army of the Potomac.

Custer was promoted from lieutenant (brevet captain) and given command of the 2nd Brigade of the 3d Division, Army of the Potomac. Both Custer and Merritt were West Point graduates. Farnsworth had enlisted in the Illinois cavalry in 1861.

Not to be pedantic (or come off as a show off) but both Andrerson’s and Heth’s divisons were part of A.P. Hill’s III Corps, not Ewell’s II Corps.

Pettigrew’s Brigade (11th, 26th 47th and 52nd NC regiments) was part of Henry Heth’s division, not Richard Anderson’s.

One of the enduring myths of the Gettysburg campaign was that Stuart left Lee “blind” during his jaunt in Pennsylvania. Actually Lee had 2 or 3 brigades of cavalry with him - what he lacked was Stuart himself who “never brought me a false piece of information.” General Early’s divison actually passed through Gettysburg a few days earlier before the battle. Oneo fhis Early’s brigaed commaders ( aformer Governor named William “Estra Billy” Smith who commanded a Virginia birgade) made a speech before the people of I think York which went soemthing like this: “My friends, how do you like our coming back into the Union?”
