You are correct although the Kennedy people thought Texas was the ballgame - lose it and probably lose the Presidency.

It’s interesting what might have happened in a Kennedy-Goldwater race. Barry would have made substantial inroads in the south (he did anyway, coming close in 4 or 5 southern states even against Johnson). Kennedy would have been forced to go with the big state strategy - big union states in the NE and MW and hope to pick up some border states as well as the mid-atlantic.

It’s pretty much Kerry’s strategy from ‘04. And TX and OH would have been the ballgame for the Kennedys as well as Bush.

Actually Kennedy was in Dallas because he was in deep political trouble not only in Texas but nationally, well on his way to becoming a one term President. While the riff you metioneded was fact so were his declining poll numbers and dissatisfaction with his presidency. Had Kennedy lived Goldwater may well have become president.

As Barry said in an interview sometime after the election what had he learned? He said â€ They said if you voted for Goldwater we would end up in a war in Asia, I did and we did.â€

Its funny how things work. As much as I heard the right bitch about Clinton, I never heard any suggestions of someone taking him out. Sure, there were fake three dollar bills with Clinton’s face on it, but never were an outlandish death threat. As much as I hate Rush Limbaugh, he never said he would off Clinton if he had the chance.

What I find ironic is that Betty Williams was a former terrorist. She was a member of the IRA for about a year. She claims she quit after witnessing a British soldier get shot. She supposedly kneeled down and prayed beside him. Flashforward thirty three years later, she wants to kill the president of the United States. Well as a peace prize, winner she is in good company with the IAEA Yasser Arafat and Jimmy Carter.
