The pope didn't exactly apologize for what he said; his actual statement was something along the lines of "I'm sorry you felt the need to react so virulently to what I said."

Perhaps the pearl of Mulim moderation needed a bit of sand to form itself around. Maybe in the very process of asking themselves "what did our prophet bring forth that was both new and good?" in order to form rational responses, a new course might be set for the future of Islam. People who have been forbidden to examine their beliefs now are being required to. If God is not reasonable, and reasonableness isn't Godly, let them tell us why not. Let them decide for themselves if they are satisfied with their own theologians, and read their own holy books in their own languages. Let them ask why they believe what they believe. That's how reformations begin.

Where are all these moderate Muslims we've heard so much about the last five years?

By moderate, do you mean the Muslims who explain or justify suicide bombings and the murder of school children by alluding to Zionism, Western policies, etc., as opposed to those who actually commit these atrocities? If so, please clarify. It's imperative that we be really, really specific when discussing moderation in the interfaith dialogue.

I hope you'll excuse the sarcasm, but a lot of people have searched high and low for several years to find this fabled "moderate Islam" and have been tragically disappointed. The legacy of that effort has been universal condemnation and self-flagellation over the slightest offense to the so-called "religion of peace."

What we've lost in the process is freedom to criticize a philosophy that encourages the subjugation of non-adherants and violently suppresses all dissent or heresy. Were I an illiterate goatherder in Pakistan, I wouldn't find any of this particularly odious. But I'm a product of the same society and culture you are, and am therefore disinclined to eat the bologna sandwich that goes by the name of "moderate Islam."
