Pierre Gmayil got assasinated today 11/21/2006. What intrigued me and almost came as a SHOCK to me was the method he was killed and the preparation that happenned to it.

He was killed using guns with silencers, whats shocking is Nasrallah claimed almost a month ago that they intercepted information about silencers are being shipped to the american embassy in lebanon! They have been planning this method of assassinations quite a while ago, and Hizbullah has been aware of this method.

They are going to use that in the next week as an evidence that the kill was made by US in lebanon to distabilize and gain emotional reaction from the christians. The pro-syrian forced president Emile Lahoud said in his response to the assassination that it is another ring in the murderers that have started with Rafik Hariri.

This is going to be a big dish delivered to us soon to deal with. I hope the american administration is already aware of this attempt and use the right methods to counter-act it.

Rick that was a great analysis of the situation in Lebanon. I'm Lebanese and a great supporter of the Future Movement. I think you downplayed the effect of the International play. Unlike The March 14th Forces whom comparingly have weak associations with France and USA, Hizbullah have extremely strong ties with Iran and Syria.

Nasrallah would not do anything without the approval of Iran. He is only a proxy to the Syrian and Iranian governments. The war against Israel this summer was not a move made by Nasrallah, but really by Iran. They calculated it right after the Syrian motivated kidnapping of the Israeli soldier, and we all saw the furious retaliation from Ehud Olmert's government. In regards to Hizbullah's weapons I would think they have more weapons than they used to.

Iran wants Hizbullah to stay as a proxy for their army against Israel, Syria wants to gain back control of Lebanon.

Civil War? The March 14th movement won’t be able to stand against the well equipped extremely professional forces of Hizbullah. It would be a massacre. It's COMPLETLY out of the question even retaliating with force against a possible attempt from Hizbullah.

I think the international support to the current Lebanese government has been extremely weak. I admire what Dr. Rice has shown of support to the Lebanese, but still it’s not good enough. I understand that Nasrallah is damaging the government with it's relation with USA, but we have to play THEIR game. More support to the Lebanese government, more financial aids, even if it has to be proxied by France. And not to forget the media!

Lebanon is the battlefield right now between the USA vs. Iran and Syria. If Lebanon falls for Iran and Syria, Middle East new powers are created, and they are not the right powers. This is the price we pay of the vacuum created from removing Saddam Hussein.

Excellent analysis & commentary, Rick. All part of what appears to be an ever-expanding black cloud. We avert our eyes at our own peril. We will eventually be left with no choice but direct challenge, and the aggressiveness of the enemy will not afford us to shirk our responsibilities to our children and grandchildren, which has been the preferred American path for at least a generation now.

Thanks again for an excellent read.

This is all very complicated to figure out, however, what is not difficult to figure out is Hezbollah could have been completely destroyed or at least significantly harmed by now. Last summer Israel was only allowed about one month to dismantle Hezbollah. To defeat a force as powerful and dug in as Hezbollah would have required at least three months. In other words, had Israel been allowed to complete the mission Hezbollah would either be destroyed or significantly hurt by now and the Lebanese democracy would have a better chance to survive. Signing on to the UN cease fire resolution was one of the worst foreign policy decisions that the Bush administration has made. The US should have vetoed this resolution. Had Israel been allowed to complete the mission against Hezbollah the US, Israel, and the forces of liberty would be in a much better position now.
