Kate, he certainly has given some excellent speeches and he has stayed true to his convictions in each of them (and to convictions stated while still governor of TX).

Rarely though has the MSM given the content of those speeches fair shrift. For example, the "16-words" speech was great, but the left got themselves all in a tizzy over Plame/Wilson instead of taking his warnings to heart.

Yes, he could be a better speaker in general and yes he could have made different choices in the execution of the war in Iraq, but he's had a heavy partisan load to bear from the Dems since before his first election was certified.

Sadly enough, neither the press nor the Dems will get serious until "24" actually happens; so it's going to get worse before it gets better, of that I have no doubt.

"Rank pessimism" is an appropriate turn of phrase, one that certain members of Congress should keep in mind as they continue trying to convince us that the United States can't possibly survive one mediocre President.

I'll remain optimistic regardless the impression naysayers take away from tonight's SOTU speech.

America has had far worse obstacles in the past to overcome than we now face, IMO.

YMMV.

I, like you, have given up on Bush ever giving a decent speech again. He wasn't always this bad, something happened. He is overcoached or something.

But I remember him giving some excellent speeches. It seems he's lost all confidence.

State of the Union Preview

If there was ever a moment in his presidency when Bush needed to pull a rabbit out of his hat, tonight is it. But if history and today's press reports are any judge, President Bush isn't going to surprise anyone....
