Actually, that proportion of undervotes does not seem especially high -- at least to anyone who has studied American election returns.

For example, in the 2000 race in Murtha's 12 Pennsylvania district, about 35,000 fewer voted in the congressional race than in the presidential race. To put it another way there was an undervote of almost 15 percent in the congressional race.

If you look at other congressional races, you can find similar results, especially when no popular incumbent was running.

And the falloff as go you farther down the ballot is often even larger.

(That's not an endorsement of the ballot design, which I haven't seen.)

If they can't take the trouble to do the checking that the'd do in clipping cupons- I have absolutly NO sympathy for them. Actually they shouldn't be voting.

Grrrrrrr! I suppose it is a happy Sunday, but, so far, it has been nothing but annoyances. First, Dreamhost was down, finally came back up around 9:45am Eastern. Next, something is going wrong, possibly with the theme switcher. When active, I get this...

"This is also true. Why the talk about “tin-foils”?"

Because the netroots acted as if it were by design (hacking and such) that votes weren't counted - not because of the voters.

My favorite part of the whole conspiracy computer vote nonsense was that Diebold executives give money to the Democrats.

When Democrats win by a narrow margin, the voting machines work. When Democrats lose by a narrow margin, the machines are sabotaged. A pattern is emerging here...

So what's the deal? Dems claimed that the faulty design caused the undervote. This turns out to be true. Nobody claimed that it was intentional, only that it caused the wrong candidate to win. This is also true. Why the talk about "tin-foils"?
