"the legions of lobbyists whose only job is to wring as much of our tax dollars as is humanly possible from the government and deposit it in the bank accounts of their clients (keeping a healthy portion of pork for themselves)."

You mean, like Fred Thompson? The 18-year corporate lobbyist?

Oh wait, he's the right-wing hero.

Diane Feinstein makes Randy "Duke" Cunningham look like a rank amateur, so where is the outrage…Oh yea, that’s right Feinstein has a D next to her name which makes her funneling of multi-billion dollar contracts to her husband o.k. $90,000.00 of bribe money in your freezer, if there is a D by your name no problem. Sex with a minor, if there is a D next to your name not only is it o.k. but your fellow democrats will give you a standing ovation. The only reason Randy is in prison is that there was a R next to his name instead of a D.

Is it any wonder Congress has a lower approval rating than Bush - who's had numbers as low as any President in history? Congress is a god awful mess.

The tragedy of the Cunningham affair is that it reminds us how irresistable the lure of the seven deadly sins can be. Earmarks and campaign contributions are not THE problem but symptoms OF the problem. Some people take home pencils, pens, and frequent flyer miles from the office too many Congressmen and procurement officials take home earmarks. Both groups defend themselves the same way - it's no big deal - everybody does it - it's really just chump change in the grand scheme of things, etc. When Congressmen and government officials get this confused about right and wrong they need to be reminded as Congressman Cunningham has been that the benefits of your decisions/actions in office belong to the people not to your retirement fund.

When Republicans won the Legislature and the Presidency they immediately went about dropping the spending restrictions that had been in place during the Clinton years, in direct conflict with the Contract with America. When I pointed this out to conservatives all they could do is go off on liberals. At that time I had not bothered to listen to Limbaugh [and others], when I did it was an eye opening experience. Never any discussion about what Republicans were doing, it was all about liberals and the hideous plots they were hatching. It made sense, use liberals as a screen to divert attention away from what the party is actually up to. The real conservatism of Buckley is long gone, now it is the shrill liberal bashing “conservatism” of Limbaugh. Forget smaller and more honest government, the movement is dead.
