The problems is that people see immigrants as being either good or bad when the answer is much more complicated.

This bill could kill the GOP - as could any massive reform/amnesty. How can enfranchising 12-20 million new voters from left-leaning socialist countries (with political cultures of entitlements and cryonyism) benefit a party of limited government conservatives ?

While I recognize that the hispanic community's entepeneurship and social conservatism could allow for inroads, bread and circuses tend to win in the end - and that game is firmly dominated by the Left.

You really should read something about Republicans on immigration besides Kos or Think Progress. Every single pro enforcement member of Congress not to mention blogger has been SKEWERING the Chamber of Commerce, NAM, NFIB, and other business groups FOR YEARS! It is absolutely vital that along with closing down the borders we severely punish employers who hire illegals – EVEN IF THEY DO IT UNKNOWINGLY!

Your remark was pathetic and indicative that you have no clue of what you’re talking about.

Republicans may talk a good line about employer enforcement, but they don’t walk the talk. Here Kevin Drum quotes John O'Sullivan of the NY Post as saying that between 1995-7 between 10,000 and 18,000 illegals a year were arrested in work place sweeps and about 1000 employers per year were fined for employing illegals. In 2004 159 illegals were arrested and 3 employers were fined.

Now I’m not saying the 1995-7 enforcement was great or even close to good enough, but the 2004 results are essentially no enforcement at all. Actions speak louder than words.

The problem could be solved with a $50,000 per head bounty to those that turn in illegal immigrants with a fine of $60,000 per head coming out of the pockets of the companies that un/knowingly hire them, using the $10,000 difference to cover costs, of deportation.

While the Republican party is all in favor of build walls at the border and other punitive measure directed at illegals, you here almost nothing about actually enforcing the laws against employers who hire illegals and exploit them.

Holy Jesus are you kidding me?

I agree with your update comment that the Hispanic community is not monolithic, but here is California because of the legacy of the anti-illegals Proposition 87, Hispanics now vote predominately Democratic. This is in spite of the fact that on social issues many Hispanics are closer to Republican positions.

Clearlly illegals cannot vote, but there is a very large and rapidly growing legal Hispanic community in the US, and that community is very sympathetic to the illegal community. They understand that US business needs the cheap labor that illegals provide, and that many US businesses exploit and take advantage of the illegals. While the Republican party is all in favor of build walls at the border and other punitive measure directed at illegals, you here almost nothing about actually enforcing the laws against employers who hire illegals and exploit them.

[...] RightWingNuthouse responds to the allegation that we all just want the issue, not the solution: Yep. My opposition is based solely on the fact that I won’t have anything else to write about if immigration goes away as an issue. Who knows. Maybe I’d be forced to write a series of articles on incompetent lickspittle bureaucrats running the most spectacularly inept and hugely wasteful executive department in history. A department that after 5 years of existence still can’t figure out how to organize itself or, more importantly, settle the bureaucratic turf battles that make protecting the homeland effectively an impossibility.
What I meant more is active poster commentors on blogs I visit.

I am sorry but usually the responses here I can count on one hand or two.

The busy interactive blogs are pushing high number thread counts.

That says a lot.

Rick,

If enough American citizens simply stop paying taxes, will the same government that apparently condones the illegal conduct of foreigners be forced to grant amnesty to American "tax protestors"?
