Some may question my motives in defending Michelle Malkin against her critics who are becoming more vulgar, more unreasoning, and yes, more dangerous as her public profile increases as a result of her continued success on the internet and TV. Believe what you will, I really don’t care. The fact that I work for her website is, to me, completely immaterial to the matter at hand. I don’t need to “suck up” or curry favor. And if you believe anyone connected to MM.Com encouraged or directed me to write this post, I’ve got some great news; I think I saw Elvis last night at the Piggly Wiggly buying some peanut butter and bananas.
If you haven’t been following the shocking story of Geraldo Rivera’s nauseating threat to assault Malkin the next time he saw her, allow me to fill you in. In an interview in the Boston Globe on September 1, Rivera made this jaw dropping statement:
“Michelle Malkin is the most vile, hateful commentator I’ve ever met in my life,†he says. “She actually believes that neighbors should start snitching out neighbors, and we should be deporting people.
“It’s good she’s in D.C. and I’m in New York,†Rivera sneers. “I’d spit on her if I saw her.â€
Even the interviewer couldn’t resist the adjective “sneers” when talking about the way in which Rivera delivered his threat to physically assault Malkin. And while I won’t be dealing with the “substance” (more accurately, the vacuousness) of Rivera’s critique of Malkin, I would just like to point out the fact that the law requires deportation of those who are here illegally. As is typical of the open borders crowd, they advocate ignoring the law when it suits their argument. Let an illegal immigrant get into trouble and all they can do is spout chapter and verse of the US Code at you, throwing the law in your face as Rivera wants to spit into Malkin’s. But for anyone who advocates enforcement of the law that runs counter to their beliefs, such trivialities can safely be ignored.
Beyond what Rivera said, is the venue he chose to say it. This was not, as Malkin points out, an accidental aside made by Rivera in an unguarded moment:
Now, can you imagine the uproar if any other female journalist/commentator had been on the receiving end of Geraldo’s rhetorical spittle? This wasn’t an off-the-record comment at a cocktail party or a private remark in a green room. It was on-the-record smear to a Boston Globe reporter.And the message over the past week has been: This smear/attack/threat is acceptable.
This is what has me worried. And not just for Malkin who, while perfectly capable of taking care of herself, nevertheless brings out the “brother” in me. For I must confess that Malkin’s success in what has overwhelmingly been a male dominated industry – political and social commentary – reminds my very much of the success realized by my older sister who broke through the glass ceiling years ago to become a partner in one of Washington’s most prestigious law firms.
Both Malkin and my sister share many similar traits that endear them to their supporters while sending their opponents over the edge. Both are whip smart, tough, ambitious, not shy about expressing an opinion (even if they know it’s unpopular) and challenge convention at the drop of a hat. Their exterior beauty, which cause many to underestimate them, masks a backbone made of tempered steel. “Feminists” in the real sense of the word, neither one bitches or moans about anything life has dealt them – least of all their gender. They simply go out and achieve, making no apologies and asking for no favors.
If that sounds like an unrealistic portrait think again. There are millions of women like them who share many of those traits to one degree or another. And I’m sure that many of these women have met someone like Geraldo Rivera at one time or another in their career. The “sneer” on Rivera’s lips when threatening Malkin is familiar to many women who meet men threatened by their brains, ambition, and yes, beauty. Rivera does not get as nasty when dealing with males who disagree with him. One could easily conclude that for all his bluster, he is little better than a bully who thinks he can push those weaker than him around when he senses a physical advantage.
If Rivera had said something like that about my sister, he would find seven aging but husky brothers lined up in opposition politely requesting he eat those words by chomping on the newspaper they were printed in. And since we were all of us brought up as gentlemen, we would be more than happy to supply Mr. Rivera with whatever condiments he would need to make his repast as palatable as possible under the circumstances.
But Malkin’s gender only answers part of the question as to why her commentaries draw the over the top, unhinged hate and loathing of so many on the left. Her opinions are no more inflammatory than many seen on the internet. And while she runs one of the largest blogs in the conservative sphere, size alone cannot explain why she regularly receives the nastiest, the most obscene, the most vulgar hate mail imaginable.
The mystery deepens when you consider the fact that there is no blogger – right or left, large or small – who does more to promote worthy causes than Michelle Malkin.
I can attest to this as fact since for the last 3 months, I have been engaged in re-categorizing all 7,400 posts ever written on Malkin’s blog. The breadth of charities, foundations, memorial funds, and special requests for assistance that she has highlighted over the years and asked her 150,000 daily readers to support is absolutely astonishing. Can you imagine Gawker or Kos or any of Malkin’s most vehement tormentors giving that much space over to charity? You can disagree with Malkin on the issues. But you cannot fault her public spiritedness. Wounded soldiers, disaster relief, even individual families who have a loved one with some rare, debilitating health problem have all been featured on her site and her readers pressed into service.
Does that count for anything with Malkin’s uncivil critics? Of course not. And Malkin herself has brought the ugly truth out in the open time and time again as to the true nature of her critics incivility. They don’t try to argue the merits of the issues. They rarely address the specific points of Malkin’s arguments in their critiques. Instead, they routinely use Malkin’s race as a way to personalize their reprehension.
Malkin does not fit into the little political and intellectual boxes the left reserves for each grouping of Americans they see fit to categorize. Their (un)reasoning goes something like this: Asians are minorities. Minorities are oppressed and need the tender ministrations of liberals to save them from white America’s depredations. All real Asians believe everything that liberals believe. If they don’t, they are not “authentic” minorities but rather “sell outs” to white America.
To try and patiently explain to liberals (as I have many times) that believing members of a minority should think a certain way simply because they are a member of that minority group is as racist a point of view as someone who burns a cross on that minority’s front yard does absolutely no good. Their linear thinking on matters of race is as set in stone as their belief in the efficacy of government to solve social problems. And this kind of miasmic thinking about race and politics comes through loud and clear when reading what others write about Malkin and her positions on the issues.
First and foremost is the charge that she is just a tool of others – her husband, the Bush Administration, a secret right wing cabal – and that she has prostituted herself, selling her race to the highest bidder in order to get ahead.
To answer that, I’ll simply direct you to this post of hers that I came across in my re-categorization project. Short version: “This is not a right-wing conspiracy. This is marriage.” I’ll let that stand as the definitive answer to those insulting, outrageously hateful charges.
The second major race-hating meme advanced by Malkin’s critics is the charge that she loathes herself and her race so much that she allows her self-hate to color her politics, advancing ideas like support for the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and strict enforcement of laws against illegal immigration.
The left usually isn’t happy unless they get their opponents on the couch so that they can analyze them in their own special way. Witness Glen Greenwald’s “A Tragic Legacy” which has been dubbed “a character study” of George Bush. And John Dean’s “Conservatives Without a Conscience” that purports to show the psychological attraction authoritarianism has for conservatives. This penchant for amateur psychoanalysis manifests itself in Malkin’s case when the left tries to explain how it is possible a member of a minority can possibly disagree with them on any issue of consequence. Since Malkin breaks the mold by being a conservative, she is obviously mentally unbalanced.
I’ll leave it to real mental health professionals to diagnose whatever disorder afflicts people who believe such nonsense.
Finally, there are is the simple vulgarity of the unmasked racists who routinely refer to Malkin as a “wog whore” and much worse. If this kind of true hate speech (not the fake variety the left routinely accuses the right of making) were vigorously denounced by leading bloggers on the left, it would certainly help to mitigate some of the disapprobation I and most conservatives heap upon lefty bloggers on a regular basis. After all, Malkin herself has taken conservatives to task many times for out of bounds behavior. Is it too much to ask that the favor be returned when the ultra-personal slights, insults, and obscenities are tossed her way?
Evidently so. In fact, top liberal bloggers join in the racist name calling with a relish that would be shocking if we weren’t used to it by now. No one on the left calls them out for it. No one on the left calls for a halt to the vulgarities. Instead, they gleefully pile on in an orgy of the most nauseating racism, each trying to top the other in coming up with the most vile racist venom they can scribble.
Somebody, somewhere on the left has to stand up for simple decency. The response to that plea is usually pegged to Malkin’s not mincing words to expose the hypocrisy of liberals. Somehow, Malkin’s derogatory language aimed at the left gives her critics the freedom to riposte with whatever they feel is appropriate – or can get away with.
The idea that if Malkin calls someone a “moonbat” it is fair game to use a derogatory racial slur to describe her is perhaps the most unsettling aspect of this matter. Proportionality doesn’t seem to enter into the discussion. Malkin tosses a knife and the left goes nuclear. Something is wrong with that picture and unless people start to focus on the true nature of this grossly unfair and dangerously incendiary rhetoric, there will be nothing left of American politics except an unlivable wasteland where there is no hope that the two sides can ever unite when this country faces its next crisis.
Keith Olbermann made Malkin his “Worst Person in the World” last night. But it wasn’t for anything Malkin did. Rather, it was so that Olbermann could approvingly quote Geraldo Rivera’s spitting threat to a national audience. To realize that Olberman was, in effect, encouraging an assault on Malkin made me inexpressibly sad. The left is running toward a gasoline dump with a lit match. And nobody on their side seems willing to yell at them to stop.

Nice article. I get up at around 3am pst and olbermans lil snipit caught my eye on hotair, I watched, no coffee yet and about flipped. I was unfortunate enough to see this worm get started out here in California I wasnt impressed then and now even less, digusting. The left is taking this Country down the tubes and doesnt care. God help us all. It definetly is a bizarro world now and if we lose someone like Michelle Malkin out there trying to keep an insane world sane then we really are in trouble. I dont think she will say it isnt worth it and give up she’s way to strong for that and especially not over Olberman and Rivera.

She really jumped the shark when she wrote that disgusting book defending the internment. Sorry, but I have a hard time drumming up any sympathy for her and I actually wish she would stay off my side.

Malkin and Patterico say “Deport the Criminals First.” Apparently, the otherwise “law abiding illegals” will get to remain in this country once the “criminal illegals” are deported under this policy scheme.
This is not a conservative stance: it is an abrogation of sovranty and a party line stance against the interests of this nation and in support of big business’ scheme of “slavery lite.”
It’s an unconscionable policy position to which the majority of Americans are opposed to. There is nothing conservative about it. Go back 4 months and see what the # 2 Senate GOP-er (Trent Lott) had to say about her; and the hyper progressive/liberal GOP Sens from FLA and Alabama also said things that would not air on family TV about Michelle. There are some elements on the left who don the anonymity afforded by the internet like a shroud and burn a virtual cross daily which is intended to intimidate conservatives, Republicans and/or born again Christians. Personally, I’ve already told Fox that the only times I leave their channel are when Geraldo or Susan Estrich are on (unless there’s football, of course). Now NBC is trying to sneak Olberman in on their football broadcasts. I NEVER watch MSNBC and if I see Olberman on an NBC football broadcast I change the channel. Michelle uses wit and intelligence to state her opinions. Moonbats HATE wit and intelligence. I find it odd that while the left touts Nancy Pelosi, Italian American, as breaking the marble ceiling trying to make her a “minority” they can slander a woman who is obviously brilliant, dedicated to her family and to the plight of others, and who has done more to give an American face to those of Asian heritage than anyone else, including Norm Mineta.
Gerald Rivera is a cheap trick. While he screams how his children are being profiled for being Hispanic, he never bothers to mention that not only do his children have very few Hispanic traits (like darker skin), they are only 1/4 Hispanic since Gerald himself is only 1/2 and he married only gringas. The only thing Hispanic about Gerald’s children is their last name.
MM is the face of what honest and legal immigration can contribute to our nation. She, not Gerald Rivera, broke the marble ceiling for minorities. She, not Gerald Rivera, mainstreams minorities in America.
I used to say that I only needed one channel, Fox News. But with the introduction of Gerald Rivera, et al, I have started spending more time on the internet. The news I glean from the net is cleaner, more accurate and more informative.
Fox News needs to buy Rivera’s contract out and rid themselves of this blight. How many viewers are they willing to lose to promote diversity? If they really want diversity, maybe they can hire Henry Bonilla, a 100% Hispanic.

Growing up half a century ago there was a word used to refer to Puerto Ricans that ironically sounded like spit. Thanks to years and the USAF I haven’t used or even thought of that word for close to 50 years. Geraldo or Gerry or whatever his name is has me thinking that maybe the name should be revived … but on reflection I don’t care to wallow in the gutters with the kos kids and their ilk.

Random thoughts. With no intent to offend you, I’m surprised Michelle allows comments, as she has, in the past, received unspeakably racist and sexist comments from leftist readers. Second, she’s friends with Bill Scher of Liberal Oasis (old college buddies). I watched a most enjoyable discussion with those two on a “Hot Air” vlog- she was civil, witty and accomodating. I’ve watched “Hot Air” videos enough to know that’s she’s quirky, funny, and provocative. Geraldo needs to chill.

A couple of weeks ago when Malkin was subbing for the loathsome Bill O’Reilly, she belittled the band Pearl Jam and accused them of engaging in hate speech when their singer sang “George Bush leave this world alone. George Bush go find another home.” She, uh, considers those words “hateful,” huh? Yet I didn’t catch her using the same rhetoric when singer Ted Nugent told his audience he wanted Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to “suck on” his machine gun and called them some truly hateful names. So, it’s hard to buy into all the glowing comments about how strong and forthright she is, when she’s a plain-old hypocrite like so many other talking heads.

It seems that the left cannot argue the points unless they resort to racial slurs (being the party of tolerance), demeaning a person (being the party of personal destruction) and using profanity (being the party of zero moral standards).

Let Michelle talk, but she has zero credibility. My beef with FoxNews is that it is not even close to fair and balanced on the immigration issue. Example, there is the brilliant, extremely articulate Kim Strassel armed with facts (not bumper sticker phrases and inane scare tactics) who DOES speak for me, but who is kept hidden by the geniuses at Fox. If they must let Malkin drone on and on and on (plus Gibson, Hannity, Gingrich, et al.) why not give equal time in a calm format to someone like Strassel? Actually, it would be demeaning to Strassel to appear with Michelle the clown and the self-appointed border expert. But something along these lines might indicate to former fans that Fox hasn’t become a giant, repetitive hysteria machine.
I’m afraid Geraldo spoke for me… precisely, and with the same level of frustration the Malkins of the Right have caused for me over the last couple years. I cheered when I read his comment. But it disappointed me that it had to come from a non-right wing ideologue. Pretty soon, the GOP needs to put up some reasonable opposition to the immigration obsessed loud mouths. The “debate” is pitched so far over the lines that most people I know run away with hair on fire whenever the subject arises—which is pretty much 24/7 on the “conservative” airwaves. Geraldo brought a miniscule amount of balance or push-back to the conversation. Why is it that his few sentences stand out when Malkin has been dishing outrage and vitriol and a whole lotta nonsense for what seems like an eternity?

Some stupid college leftists drive army recruiters off campus so Malkin publishes their personal information on her website resulting in them getting bombarded by death threats from her readers, but when someone responded in kind and released some of HER personal info in TIT-FOR-TAT response to her own actions, she complained that she got …. gasp threatened by uncivil leftists.
She either knew or should have known that her actions would result in serious harassment of the students but she did it anyway because she didn’t like their politics. When the same thing was done to her she not only acted as scared as anyone else but claimed that it was ok for her to publish their info but not for someone else to publish hers.

As a solid conservative, there is no way that Michelle Malkin (MM) speaks for me, or anyone I know. Ever. One can forgive her being a noxious, intellectual lightweight. What’s hard to forgive is her cloying and assumed role as a leader among conservative thinkers. NOTE: I hasten to point out the obvious paradox in using a word like thinker in the same sentence with MM. In spite of this man’s paid cheerleading, the only thing for which MM appears to have distinguished herself is an ability to create hypenated words and phrases that include the word “crap.â€
The question begging to be asked is why would MM keep the Geraldo quote, which so offends her, prominently placed on her website? Dare we think that she’s still hoping to inspire an army of conservative support? Probably. Yo, Rick, better tell MM that no conservative who has ever had the misfortune of seeing/hearing her and who then reads Geraldo’s quote will sign up. Sorry, MM, Geraldo nails it.
Pssssst…since you have her ear, Rick, do real conservatives a favor—tell her to just go away. Today would be good.

i appreciate your brotherly sensitivities in wanting to protect Michelle. Like you, I had almost the same feelings for Michelle long ago, especially vis a vis the Japanese Internment Camps. Having lived during that era, and having a Japanese sister-in-law who came to the U.S. post WWII, I knew there was a truth in what she said, as did my SIL who remarked that the Japanese were well treated in that instance, unlike the way American’s were treated by the Japanese.
However, Michelle and Geraldo have the same fatal flaws. Their passions (and their wish for notoriety) causes them to both over-react and to lose perspective in finding the underlying truth in the subject. On the Immigration issue, Geraldo comes the closest in seeing the hyperbole and inaccuracy of Michele’s statements (not the first time she has supported the wrong side for her harangues)and I completely agree with a prior poster that she has done more harm than good to
the Conservative movement. I long ago lost faith in her messages, knowing many to be untrue and a false impassioned plea to gain the notoriety that she now craves.

I have been recategorizing her posts since the middle of June. Geraldo made his statement on September 1. Are you brain dead as well as being an ignoramous? How is it possible Geraldo “inspired” this task when it has been going on 3 months longer than his threats?
Now, in my universe, that would seem to indicate that your statement that the recategorization project was “inspired” by Geraldo is perhaps the absolutely most hilarious example of ignorance ever exhibited on this site. As for being a paid cheerleader, see my comment above. The only way I could have made clearer that my motives for this post were personal and had little to do with Malkin is if I took out all the words of more than two syllables so that retarded nincompoops like you would have a chance of understanding it.
Of course, that would mean that you would have to actually, you know, READ the post instead of superficially gathering a sense of what I wrote.
Next time, please read what I write so that people won’t laugh at you when you comment.

You recategorize posts – or in this case where about 3500 were “uncategorized” you find a category for them – because about 30-40% of a bloggers visitors come via search engines.
Search engines like Google take keywords from categories – the closer your keyword to what someone using a search engine wants, the higher your ranking hence, more visitors.
Trying to outsmart search engines is an age old game for people who run web sites – including bloggers.
Now that you’ve made a complete ass of yourself – AGAIN - maybe you want to know something like what direction the sun will set tonight or rise tomorrow morning? (Hint: It’s not north or south).

You know something? I don’t much like Michelle Malkin’s writing style. I’ve never met her personally, but I’m sure I would like her if I met her. However, much of what she’s written seems unnecessarily over-the-top and provocative to me. Calling someone a moonbat, for example, is much more effective if you don’t do it all the time, and I recall several times thinking “OK, she really didn’t need to be that rude” while reading her site. Even when I agree with her (which is often but not all the time), I sometimes wish she’d be a little more moderate in her argumentation style. Pick the good arguments from the other side and attack their logic, instead of going after the easily-demolished fringe from the other side.
But Geraldo Riviera should be ashamed of himself for his “spitting” comment. And nothing justifies the kind of hate mail she’s received. Goodness gracious, that stuff is ugly! You’d think people who pride themselves on their “tolerance” would refrain from that kind of behavior. But clearly, for far too many people, “tolerance” means “You will tolerate what I say, because otherwise you’re just a hateful, bigoted racist. And I will not tolerate what you say, because clearly you’re a hateful, bigoted racist.”
So count me in as defending Malkin. I sometimes disagree with her opinions, and more often disagree with her over-aggressiveness, but the attacks on her have been WAY beyond the pale. Those who’ve written the kind of hate-filled emails she gets should—if they have any scrap of decency left in them—be utterly ashamed of themselves. Sadly, they won’t be, but they should.

Her remarks about the Medal of Honor recipients that had their decoration upgraded after several decades being “naked politicization” simply because Clinton happened to be the person who presented them were totally outrageous. She said this was the justification for her book “In Defense of Internment”, which she later had to retract some of the central premises about the cables.

I’m intrigued by this, Rick—you’ve reacted sharply to some of the fiercer comments above, and it’s easily understood why, though my own views on Ms. Malkin’s style and approach are very far from yours. But comments 34 and 39 struck me as being interesting examples of objections to said style etc. from a conservative approach arguing for larger goals over individual commentators. Given that both tend to revolve around personal reactions to her approach, and without knowing if both posters have had a regular comment history here which may mean you don’t wish to respond for good reason, maybe there isn’t much to be said in response—individual responses will always differ—but surely it is important to acknowledge objections from within. (Unless you are Jim from Oh Said, it seems.)

I will brook no hint, intimation, allusion, suggestion, or outright charge that I am in any way, shape, or form beholden to, a lackey for, or otherwise influenced by Michelle Malkin or my position with her blog as it relates to this post.
I have made crystal clear my reasons for writing it. The fact that people can’t read English and insist on ascribing false, improper, even sinister motives to me for defending Malkin will bring down the wrath of Rick upon them – uncensored and in their faces.
I disagree with Malkin on many, many issues. We see eye to eye on many more. She didn’t hire me because I agree with her and I don’t work for her because I’m a huge fan.
We have a business arrangement, period. If some lefty blogger had offered me a position to do similar work – and the blogger in question wasn’t a flaming moonbat – I would have seriously considered the proposition.
Malkin’s case perfectly – and I mean perfectly – illustrates what I have been writing about the left for nearly three years now; that most of them are a bunch of hypocritical, soulless, whining philistines – wildly illogical, morbidly fascinated with America’s faults without any reasonable perspective on our past or present politics, and a mean streak a mile wide.
I would have written this post whether I was employed by Malkin or not for the simple reason I have elucidated many of the points I make in the article time and time again over the years. Along with the very personal affront I feel that Rivera and the left demean and dehumanize all successful women – including my sister – by demeaning Malkin, these are my reasons and motivations for writing it.
Anyone who says or implies differently will hear about it.
