don't count your chickens before they hatch. Mitchell is director of the Red Sox organization and this report is biased. The evidence he has against Clemens is a washed up trainer pointed his finger at him. Its unfair to throw him to the wolves before he's had a chance to defend himself.

My goodness, family day at The House!

I would think Ryan was the previous generation (Mets rookie in 1965 if I recall) although he made it into Clemens era simply due to his enormous longevity.

Clemens had better command - fewer walks and a lower ERA.

Nice column, Rick. I don't know if I feel the same sense of betrayal. Maybe I've just become too much of a cynic. But baseball is really the only sport I follow these days, and I probably always will. There's just something about the rhythm of the game, almost the fluid dance, that mesmerizes me.

You're not the first person that called Clements the best pitcher of his generation, and maybe he is. But for a pure pitcher (not won-lost or championship stats) I have to go with Nolan Ryan. Seven no-hitters, 12 one-hitters, 18 two-hitters, all those strikeouts including 27 games with 15. He could start for me anytime.

> Why anyone blessed with the best right arm of his generation would take steroids will remain a mystery to me.

Faster healing. A 37 year old doesn't recover as fast from the damage caused by a normal pitched game as a 24 year old. Also, bulking up a bit would help offset the onset of middle age decrepitude.

Nice article. I love Baseball and it will always be a huge part of my life. Todays events I have to move past and put up with the way it is nowadays from steroids to salary's, players, owners all the way to the announcers and writers, I cant let it get to my passion for the grand game. I love Baseball, always will.

When I grew up in Georgia, there were no major league sporting teams in 1/4 of the country. We had only minor leagues, which in my town meant a single-A baseball team. They were miserable, but one year, we got a stunning announcement. The Cincinnati Reds had agreed to make us a farm team.

That team included the first of the players that went on to become the Big Red Machine. The player who symbolized the success of the team was a second baseman named Pete Rose. He went to the majors from that team, as we were always proud that we had seen his last minor league stop. I still have a baseball autographed by more than a dozen of these guys, who had become my idols.

Then came the gambling charges and Rose's years of denial. Even as an adult, I was crushed. As a result, I don't think I looked up to these guys the same way. But today's news is worse. There are so many of them.

Thanks. Saw a great documentary on the move of the Dodgers from Brooklyn back in 1958. The whole borrough was in agony.

Hope everyone is doing well. Sorry I missed Thanksgiving. Maybe some year I'll be able to take off for it.

Beautifully written Rick, and I agree with your sentiments. It is sad - for some of us, baseball is or was a great distraction from the responsibilities of every day life. Our daughter Theresa lives in the Bronx. When the Steinbrenner considered moving the Yankees from the Bronx, Theresa noticed the great anxiety of her neighbors. Although I am not a Yankee fan, I too would have been sad to see a positive distraction taken away from those who struggle every day just stay ahead of themselves.
