Actually, the excellent biography of George Washington by James Thomas Flexner called "Washington: The Indispensable Man" was adapted for TV a number of years ago. Called simply "George Washington," it starred the guy who played the dimwitted mayor on Spin City as George Washington, and he was actaully very good as Washington.

Rick--

I've been making my way thru "Don't Tread on Me: a 400-Year History of America at War.." by H.W. Crocker III. It's quite a deep delve into our martial
affairs.

Having read some previously about the aftermath of the Revolutionary War, I hadn't realized how long it went on and how unremitting the clashes and alarums of war.

Crockett says it was our desire for empire, and he's partially right. What he doesn't emphasize enough is our desire for security...which was identical to any other nation struggling to forge an identity.

All the way through the book one is aware how differently things might have gone. I hope you get a chance to read it.

This is a very interesting article. I never knew about Washington's intellegence gathering on the enemy, however, it does not surprise me. Winning a war begins and ends with having good intellegence on the enemy. It seems very unlikely that the Colonists could have won the war for our independence without this intellegence network.

Today the US is very weak with regards to intellegence on its enemies or even its potental enemies. The US does not have very good intellegence on Russia, China, or on Islamic terrorists. This is going to need to be addressed very soon.
