OBAMA-REZKO AND MEDIA IGNORANCE OF “THE CHICAGO WAY”

Malone: You said you wanted to get Capone. Do you really wanna get him? You see what I’m saying is, what are you prepared to do?
Ness: Anything and everything in my power.
Malone: And then what are you prepared to do? If you open the can on these worms you must be prepared to go all the way because they’re not gonna give up the fight until one of you is dead.
Ness: How do you do it then?
Malone: You wanna know how you do it? Here’s how, they pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That’s the Chicago way…

(From “The Untouchables”)

Many of us familiar with Chicago politics have been wondering for months at the apparent disconnect of the media regarding Obama’s relationship to the Chicago political machine. Where did they think this guy came from?

The lack of curiosity by the press about Obama’s connections to one of the most corrupt city governments in the United States should be one of the big media stories of this campaign. While it is true that Obama’s connections to the Machine are not as extensive as many other politicians, I’ve got news for you Obama apologists; try running for any office in Chicago – local, state, or federal – and see how far you get without support from the regular Democrats.

Besides, examining Obama’s first state senate race should have been a tip off to the national press that this fellow can play the game of politics “The Chicago Way” as well as any corrupt Daleycrat:

The day after New Year’s 1996, operatives for Barack Obama filed into a barren hearing room of the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners.

There they began the tedious process of challenging hundreds of signatures on the nominating petitions of state Sen. Alice Palmer, the longtime progressive activist from the city’s South Side. And they kept challenging petitions until every one of Obama’s four Democratic primary rivals was forced off the ballot.

Fresh from his work as a civil rights lawyer and head of a voter registration project that expanded access to the ballot box, Obama launched his first campaign for the Illinois Senate saying he wanted to empower disenfranchised citizens.

But in that initial bid for political office, Obama quickly mastered the bare-knuckle arts of Chicago electoral politics. His overwhelming legal onslaught signaled his impatience to gain office, even if that meant elbowing aside an elder stateswoman like Palmer.

A close examination of Obama’s first campaign clouds the image he has cultivated throughout his political career: The man now running for president on a message of giving a voice to the voiceless first entered public office not by leveling the playing field, but by clearing it.

Don’t you think that information like this might be included in any standard media bio of the candidate, MSNBC? Or have you guys at Fox never heard of the internet and Google?

This is politics “The Chicago Way” as John Kass points out in this ground breaking column today:

The Chicago Way.

What is it? Is it easily abused? Is it dangerous in the wrong hands?

This is critical, as the nation’s eyes turn toward Chicago’s federal building, where Barack Obama’s personal real estate fairy, Tony Rezko, stands trial on federal corruption charges.

The phrase must be put in context, something the national media fails to do when they portray Obama as the boy king drawing the sword from the stone, ready to change America’s politics of influence and lobbyists, ignoring the fact that Chicago ain’t Camelot.

With opening statements expected Thursday, the court will be packed with journalists foreign to our idiom. In the past, a few reporters have applied “The Chicago Way” to our pizza, theater and opera, thereby embarrassing themselves beyond redemption.

“Chicago ain’t Camelot” may be the understatement of this political year. Chicago is…well, Chicago. For instance:

Chicago’s mob—we call it the Outfit—was slapped last summer by federal prosecutors in the Operation Family Secrets trial that convicted Outfit bosses, and cops and put political figures in with them. We’ve had our chief of detectives sent to prison for running the Outfit’s jewelry-heist ring. And we’ve had white guys with Outfit connections get $100 million in affirmative action contracts from their drinking buddy, Mayor Richard Daley, who must have seen them pink and white and male at some point.

That’s the Chicago Way.

Are you getting the picture New York Times? Do I have to spell it out for you Washington Post? Wake up and smell the coffee, CNN!

“This country was built on taxes,” said a Democratic machine hack, Cook County Commissioner Deborah Sims, as she and other Democrats prepared to slap Chicago with the highest sales tax of any major city in the country….

“There’s not that many political hacks in Cook County,” Sims insisted after the tax hike.

Not that many hacks? The only one reporters need to bother about is also involved at the same federal building: the mayor’s own Duke of Patronage, Robert Sorich.

Sorich has been found guilty by a jury, but the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals above the Rezko courtroom is still deciding whether to redeem the jury or redeem the mayor, who’d much rather have Sorich happy than Obama in the White House.

Sorich was convicted two years ago of running the mayor’s massive and illegal patronage operation, and he’s still not in prison. Thugs, morons, idiots, and convicts were put on the city payroll to work the precincts so that Daley could keep getting elected. Obama’s spokesman, David Axelrod, defended Daley patronage in a Tribune op-ed piece.

As an aside, for a while there it looked like Fitzy might be targeting hizzoner himself, measuring him for prison coveralls. But the Daleys have always been too smart to get caught doing anything really illegal and the Mayor’s luck held.

But seriously LA Times, this is the political culture Barack Obama matured in. Would it do any harm to perhaps, you know, pretend that you’re doing your job and send a reporter down here to look into a few things.

Maybe you folks at ABC News could start by looking into those letters Obama wrote to city and state officials on behalf of his now indicted patron, friend, and fund raiser Tony Rezko to get a $14 million contract to build senior housing – a development located outside of his senate district:

The deal included $855,000 in development fees for Rezko and his partner, Allison S. Davis, Obama’s former boss, according to records from the project, which was four blocks outside Obama’s state Senate district.

Obama’s letters, written nearly nine years ago, for the first time show the Democratic presidential hopeful did a political favor for Rezko—a longtime friend, campaign fund-raiser and client of the law firm where Obama worked—who was indicted last fall on federal charges that accuse him of demanding kickbacks from companies seeking state business under Gov. Blagojevich.

The letters appear to contradict a statement last December from Obama, who told the Chicago Tribune that, in all the years he’s known Rezko, “I’ve never done any favors for him.’‘

And lest there be any doubt CBS News, here’s Obama’s “Chicago Way” response:

On Tuesday, Bill Burton, press secretary for Obama’s presidential campaign, said the letters Obama wrote in support of the development weren’t intended as a favor to Rezko or Davis.

“This wasn’t done as a favor for anyone,” Burton said in a written statement. “It was done in the interests of the people in the community who have benefited from the project.
“I don’t know that anyone specifically asked him to write this letter nine years ago,” the statement said. “There was a consensus in the community about the positive impact the project would make and Obama supported it because it was going to help people in his district. . . .

Um, no Boston Herald, the project was not benefiting people in Obama’s district. It was benefiting his buddy Rezko to the tune of $855,000. But hey! It sure sounds good when you can say that you don’t know “that anyone specifically asked” Obama to write the letters. That’s the key to any “Chicago Way” denial; be as vague as possible so just in case evidence surfaces later that you’re lying through your teeth, you have an out.

The same goes for the shady deal on the house, Philadelphia Inquirer:

Naturally, there are some squares who don’t think taxpayers should pave the Chicago Way to make it easy for Rezko to help purchase the senator’s dream house in a kinky deal exposed by the Tribune and still not fully explained.

“It’s really the Old Chicago Way,” said Jay Stewart, executive director of the Better Government Association. “In the old days they would pretty much admit it up front, and now they deny it. It’s essentially about power, access to government jobs, government contracts and taking care of your own.”

“Taking care of your own” was something Obama was very good at. How good we probably won’t know for a while. That’s because it’s not only what Obama did for Rezko and vice versa that should be occupying the press as they write about the potential next President of the United States. It’s what he did for Rezko’s cronies and other contributors that should also be examined. And the candidate himself isn’t volunteering any information. That, too is “The Chicago Way.” Be smart and keep your mouth shut.

Perhaps the Rezko trial, now underway at the Federal building downtown, will change this dynamic. But I guess I shouldn’t be too optimistic. Kass explains:

One secret DaVinci Code-type sign for the Chicago Way is in the back room of the Chicago City Council chambers at City Hall, where a portrait of George Washington looks down at the crookedness below, and extends his own hand, palm up, itchy, needing that special grease.

When even sainted George Washington is on the take, you know that something is really rotten in this town.

DRIP…DRIP…DRIP…

From today’s Sun Times: “Did Rezko find jobs for Obama staffers?”

Among those on the list were two people who appear to have Obama links and a third who’s now an Obama presidential campaign staffer.

But did the names come from Obama? His campaign staff’s short answer: Don’t know—but it’s possible.

“We do not know how decisions were made to fill specific state positions, and we have no records of any individual recommendations we were asked to make or made,” says Obama spokesman Bill Burton “But we do know that Tony Rezko, among others, was helping to gather names for the positions coming open with a new administration, and, if it is established any names came through our office, we would have no reason to doubt it.”

UPDATE II: COMMENT MODERATION OFF

With so many links on this piece – especially Insty and Hot Air – I am removing comment moderation because I am too lazy and besides I don’t want to read what you have to say anyway.

Uh – just kiddin’ about that last one, people. Let’s just say I don’t want to have to be interrpupted every few minutes and batch the comments. This is a serious site here and we do serious work.

Now excuse me while I get back to HotMovies…

UPDATE III

Reliapundit, who has been on the Rezko-Obama story for about 2 years longer than I have, has a long, detailed post on Obama’s rise in Chicago and his connections to the machine.

I can’t wait to see the holy Obama crash to the ground in flaming mass of twisted Chicago deals and political hackery. Then we can get on with the countries business of electing real president. A real president with an untainted past… a president like Hilla… no, wait… John Mc… uh… crap. Eh, whatever.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program of trying to overthrow democratically elected leaders in other countries and paying off insurgents with guns and bricks of cash so they’ll stop blowing us up.

Oh, and don’t even think that Michelle Obama hasn’t churned her way through the Chicago machine, either. She sat on the City’s crooked Landmarks commission for over five years, which could also be re-named as the Alderman’s permanent campaign contribution fund. (The City of Chicago has incredibly vague standards for what allows a building and/or neighborhood to be landmarked. Any Chicago Alderman overseeing a landmark district knows that the residents and developers in the area have to kiss their butt and donate serious campaign $$$ if they want the building permit process “expedited” at City Hall). Because of the onerous permitting process associated with landmarked buildings, landmarking can also take a huge chunk of value out of property. So if you can “make friends” on the Commission, that can translate into thousands, if not millions, of property value swing.

I agree with pretty much everything in this post.

However, the $855k fee, not that big of a deal. I have worked on a number of senior and/or low income housing deals from the lending end. There is very little profit to be made from the construction itself because the rents you can get won’t generally support an end value much higher than the cost to build. The Developer Fee is pretty much all the money that they make.

I don’t know Rezko, but I underwrote a proposed condo deal by his company Rezmar (my employer at the time declinde to make the loan). I do know Allison Davis a little (I met him a few times). He is an interesting guy, although not necessarily in a good way.

Someone should look into Rezko’s connections with Broadway Bank in Chicago. Broadway is owned by the Giannoulis family and Alexi Giannoulis is the recently elected Treasurer of Illinois.

The mainstream media is not reporting on Obama’s links to Rezko and Auchi. Auchi is a UK Billionaire with long term ties to Rezko. Auchi also had extensive ties to Saddam Hussein . Auchi helped facilitate the purchase of Obama’s home via a loan to Rezko wife for the purchase of property that was adjacent to Obama’s home. Given the strong ties between Obama and Rezko and Rezko and Auchi it is up to Obama to release all correspondence , contacts and financial dealings he had with Rezko and Auchi via Rezko. It would also be of interest to know if Saddam Hussein was trying to influence USA foreign policy via his contacts with Auchi.

Obama’s constant refrain about being right about being against the Iraq war warrant further scrutiny in light of Obama’s links to Rezko and Auchi. Post 9/11 many considered Saddam a real and imminent threat to the world and the US. This was based on the overwhelming conclusion of world wide intelligence agencies that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and was in contact with Al Qaeda. In addition Saddam repeatedly violated sixteen United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCRs) and had committed numerous human rights violations including the use of chemical weapons to kill his own people. Yet, despite this and the fact the majority of Obama’s Democratic cohorts supported the Iraq war Obama stood against taking any military action against Saddam.

In hindsight maybe Obama was right but the reality is Saddam is no longer a threat , Al Qaeda is on the run in Iraq, and the US has not had another 9/11. So while many have strong arguments that the war in Iraq was a mistake, one could also make a case that the war in Iraq was the right decision. Time alone will render the final verdict. Again, given Obama’s claim that his judgment of the Iraq war was the correct judgment, further scrutiny into what his logic was to stand against the Iraq war is fair play.

all true, more or less, but no one is talking about how Obama is a trained, Saul Alinsky community organizer, and that should be a serious thought for anyone who knows what that means—vicious, end-justifies-any-means including the rankest of dishonesty, no problems destroying people in pursuit of the goal, etc. No one is even mentioning that.

Dear Mr. Moran: Side note: in the Chicago TRIBUNE article that is your first link, your fellow blogger Don Surber collects yet more royalties on his “Name That Party!” game. It happens this way: the article discusses that Obama knocked out Alice Palmer, who had tried running in a special election for a recently vacated Congressional seat. In the TRIBUNE’s words:

“At the same time, the South Side’s political map was thrown up for grabs when then-U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds was convicted of sex crimes and a special election was called to fill his congressional seat.”

What party does Reynolds belong to? Well, the TRIBUNE saw fit to tell us why Reynolds was vacating the seat, but not what party he belonged to. I’ll give you a hint: Reynolds was succeeded by Jesse Jackson Jr.

So even when the local press is exposing a candidate, they take care of the right ones. That, too, is the The Chicago Way.

    Sincerely yours,

the chicago dailies have been covering this stopry from the start.

it hasn;t gotten a lot of traction because it’s sort of like writing about gotti in ny: people know the story so well they shrug it off.

now that obama has a chance to win the nomination and even maybe the WH, people should pay more attention to just how corrupt he is. and always has been.

plus: he’s a socialist who panders to arabs.

a bad combo for the nation, but perhaps a PERFECT rep for what the Dem party has become.

But, let me get this straight, a U.S. Senator buys a house for $300K under the asking price and his buddy, a corrupt Chicago fixer buys the lot next door from the same owner in the same time period for the asking price. There is no connection? How can there not be a connection? Didn’t they (Obama and Rezko) tour the property together?

Are you kidding me? That looks like at $300,000 bribe or payoff to me. Not withstanding the fact that the person buying the lot didn’t have the income to support the sale. What happened after the bribe is immaterial…

Are you saying that Rezko is not crooked? or shall we wait for the trial to be over?

Also, has Obama answered the questions regarding this in PERSON to the Chicago media? Hmmm, I don’t think so. Any idea why?

What did Obama do wrong? Be specific.

Do you know whether the Rezkos sold the lot? Do you know, if so, whether they sold it for a loss, a profit, or if they broke even? Do you have any idea at all about what you’re spewing?——- Original Message——-

This is not related? Rezko’s wife only made $37K a year – you don’t see the connection? Are you blind?

Is Michelle Obama Trying To Tell Us Something?

Could this be why Michelle Obama is so down on America, so prone to belittling her husband, and so vocal about it?

Here you have a well educated, probably well intended, idealistic woman who has watched her husband sell-out everything she believes in. She probably justified it at first as pragmatism. While she knew he’d been corrupted, and employed corruption to win his seat, at least he had the opportunity to do some good. But strangely he didn’t bother to. He didn’t want to shake things up any longer, he wanted to buy a 1.65 Million dollar mansion instead.

The man she’d married who had so much potential had sold-out at the first opportunity. But rather than blame him, or blame the Chicago political machine, she’s projected her anger and humiliation on American society. So we’re all ‘mean spirited’, ‘cynics, sloths, and complacents’. Don’t those terms seem a little too personal for social criticism? – who is she actually condemning for their cynicism and complacency?

ronalddog, I think I read somewhere (Chicago paper) that Mrs. Rezko, who bought the lot next to the Obamansion, paid $625,000.00 (full price) for the lot by putting $125,000.00 down on it when she had an income of $37,000/yr. While carried the note and what one of us could finance $500,000. on a $37K/year income? The owner of the property was initially asking $2.2 mil for both the house and the land-locked lot next to it. Obama paid $1.65 mil for the house, Mrs. Rezko paid %625K for the lot (total $2.275 Mil) and both pieces of property were closed on the same day.

I also read that Mrs. Rezko sold the property for $700,000 to pay off debts and lawyers for Tony Baby. That means that the lot, which she bought for $625K, brought her a $75K profit, AFTER she sold a ten foot strip to Obama for $125.K for a total of $800K. In just a short few years, she made a cool 32% profit in just a couple of years. Who did she sell it to?

And while Obama claims that he had his gardner mow the lawn of the lot as well as his home, Rezko coughed up $14,000.00 to fence both properties. A nice wrought iron fence.

But take a look at the other players in this: Auchi – a Syrian who had strong ties to Saddam and funneled billions of OIF money throught his bank once he established and who is now the 18th richest man in Great Britain and who was also tied to the assassination of the Iraqi president along with Saddam Hussein but was later pardoned; Aiham Alsammarae, an Iraqi who was Minister of Energy and is tied to a missing $2 BILLION in Iraq reconstruction funds, who was jailed in Iraq for his crime but managed to escape with the help of security people (Rezko owned a security firm that was trying to get a contract from Iraq to train Iraqis to secure the energy infrastructure)and paid Alsammarae a $1.5 mil kickback to secure the contract. Alsammarae has been sentenced to nine years in Iraq in absentia; and Ali Ata. Not to mention that after Rezko showed up in Chicago in the late 1970’s to attent the Chicago Institute of Technology, he went to work for Crucial Concessions in 1984. Why is that important? Because Crucial Concessions is owned by Hubert Muhammad, son of Elijah Muhammad, the founder of the Nation of Islam. In William Ayers (the home grown terrorist friend of Obama’s) book, he mentions that Louis Farrakhan lived in the same neighborhood as writer Barack Obama.

This corruption weaves like a spider web. Obama, Syrians, Iraqis and millions of dollars.

But the MSM, like Rick said, will not touch one hair on the head of their golden boy. Has there been any doubt that the media is in the tank for Obama and has been for a long time? And we are expected to pay for the rags they print. The least they could do is make the trash they print free.

One other thing; one has to ask why Aiham Alsammarae, who has been sentenced in Iraq for corruption, is still allowed to roam free in Chicago.

Excellent question. There appears to be some kind of silent agreement between the US and Iraqi governments that opening up this guys case would get a lot of important people in trouble in both countries. He apparently made off with more than a half a billion in US taxpayer reconstruction funds.

He is a boyhood friend of Rezko and Obama is tangentially involved in a scam involving the building of an Iraqi power plant by Rezko and the training of power plant security guards at an abandoned military base in western Illinois.

    Len, how about this:

McCain’s father, and grandfather, served the U.S. Navy with honor all their lives. Obama’s father was a womanizing drunk from Kenya.

McCain spent five years in a North Vietnames POW camp. Obama spent a few year being a “community organizer”.

McCain spent the rest of his life in the service of his nation. Obama has been a U.S. senator for three years.

McCain, according to Bob Bennett, was completely innocent in the Keating 5 scandal, and Bennett, a life long Democrat, recommended that both McCain and Glenn be dropped from the investigation. McCain was raked over the coals over Keating 5. Obama hangs out with Syrian crooks funded by Iraqi crooks, and home grown terrorists like William Ayers.

McCain has fought against pork spending for his entire career. Obama will not release his pork records for the years 2005 or 2006.

    Is that a start?

Rick Moran of the Right-Wing Nuthouse says not much, considering that Obama is a Chicago Democrat not so much in the mold of Mayor Richard Daley, but more riding the groove. Many of us familiar with Chicago politics have been wondering for months at the apparent disconnect of the media regarding Obama’s relationship to the Chicago political machine. The Media Fix was in, as far as I can personally attest, as early as last February. If you think Chicago politics doesn’t abut New York politics and NY media in a meaningful way, you’re just not paying attention.

It’s either money and/or fear keeping the MSM away. They won’t leave their hotel rooms in Bagdad or walk around alone in Chicago; and your average crime and corruption reporter isn’t exactly immune to envying the lifestyles of his subjects.

    Obama—>Rezko—>Auchi—>Saddam Hussein & Muammar al-Gadaffi
    EXCUSE ME:

Obama got his money from Rezko who got his 3.5 million from Auchi:

    Where’s the media?

Nadhmi Auchi is an Iraqiborn billionaire who was charged along with Saddam Hussein for conspiring to assassinate Prime minister (president) Abdul Karim Qasim and stood trial in 1959. (Auchi gave fellow Baath Party members machine guns from his home for Saddam Hussein.)

Auchi protected secret money for Saddam Hussein AND Muammar alGadaffi.

(Remember, Obama’s Trinity church Pastor Wright went with Nation of Islam minister Louis Farrakhan in 1993 to visit Libyan socialist leader Gadaffi.)

-Auchi also financially backed Saddam Hussein’s plan for a pipeline from Iraq to Saudi Arabia.

-Rezko was also a business partner with Nation of Islam Founder’s son: Jabir Herbert Muhammad.

Why isn’t the media talking about all of Barack Obama’s scary friends who have ties to the worst people in history?

*Don’t forget William (Bill) Ayers and Bernadine Dorhn of the Weather Underground.

*Obama’s cousin Raila Odinga who just became co-President of Kenya this week (after 1,000 people were killed) whom Obama is said to be close to…who signed a secret pact with Muslim jihadists who were to ethnically cleanse people?

And why does Raila Odinga use Obama’s exact same campaign slogan: CHANGE….Vote for CHANGE: Look at his website:
