Stuck in my head...

"Allentown," by Billy Joel. I blame Barack Obama, but I'm not bitter ...

In fairness, though, this post might have something to do with it....

Well, one other item missed on the collapse of the steel industry was the infliction of environmental protection standards.
The very real costs of those standards are never counted against the very real benefits from those highly touted standards.

Given all the hot air, it's ironic that the biggest employer in Allentown is Air Products.

"That same world we built from the ashes of World War II began to fall apart in the 1970’s thanks to a variety of factors largely beyond our control. The blast furnaces of Japan, Germany, and France – much newer and more efficient than the aging plants in America – were out-competing us in our own country."

I need to point out that this is entirely wrong.

The US did indeed need to modernize it's steel industry, and took fairly drastic steps to encourage the industry to do so. Just Google US Steel and Tarrifs.

These political actions were a windfall for US Steel. And what did it do with that windfall? It damn sure didn't modernize it's plants. It bought Marathon Oil.

Don't liberals regard third-work people as gormless children? Do they not regard ANYONE who dares vote Republican as some sort of clueless hick? Of course they do. And at the same time, they regard those who do vote for them as rubes also!

While I grew up believing that the biggest difference between the two parties was that the Dems' mantra was: We'll do FOR you and that the Republican mantra was: we'll teach you to do for YOURSELF. The only change is that now the Republicans are starting to sound just like the Dems I encountered as I was growing up in Cleveland (then and now a Dem stronghold) in the 40s and 50s. The voters were always promised that the factory jobs would ALWAYS be there and there was no curiosity or willingness to look beyond the narrow confines of their own lives - both a good and bad thing in many cases. Their voters always believed them. I didn't, but then we were that rarest of birds - an entirely conservative Republican family who believed in doing for ourselves.

The "dependency" mindset is not just limited to third-generation welfare families, you know. It's endemic and exists on both sides of the political spectrum and in all ethnic and religious groups, although I'll admit to a lesser extent in the Republican Party overall. The big sin (to me anyway) of the Republican Party is that our politicians have lost their cojones altogether and act grateful when Dems spit on them! And that to me is just the most appalling behavior!

One question to ask about the light of the mid-west is the role of unions and how management found it more convenient to merely pass the costs of constant demands on to the buyer, until it chocked them to death. The union party is also the party of environmental extremism, anti-tort reform, and regulation, regulation regulation causing outsourcing and porous borders for cheaper labor. Couple all this with what was once called a sin -ENVY as the main battlecry of the leftists and it is nearly a miracle that the Democrats dare to mention bitterness about employment. I say this as an ex-union president and Democrat.
