My first reaction was total agreement- my preference is a competent chief executive, not a savior. But second thoughts creep in. JFK still inspires people, as does MLK and RFK, even Elvis, for god’s sake. And it’s not just liberals- how often did GOP contenders lay sacrifices at Ronald Reagan’s altar? Maybe it’s pathetic- or maybe it’s just us. Many will be disappointed to discover that Obama’s not a saint. Others will remain silly and giddy. But many seek inspiration, a higher calling. It’s kind of how were built.

It seems to me that much of western civilization derives from a single line of hero worship (from someone who isn’t a worshipper). This isn’t an ode to cultist hero worship. It’s an attempt to realistically assess human behavior.

Don’t ride the democrats too hard, after all the DNC has declared millions of them as only half a person. Be extra polite to anyone from Fl and Mi as all democrats in those states can’t be expected to be too bright, each of them are only worth half of what a normal person is. McCain will not have to fight hard to get as many votes, Hussein O has to have twice as many from the ‘half a person’ crowd just to be even.
