The radicals of the sixties never changed. Bill Ayers became a college professor still working to destroy the system. The Chicago rioters became Wall Street types but never gave up their beliefs. McGovern was a true war hero, a man with no qualms about bombing innocent civilians but who hated America for trying to stop the Communists in Vietnam. A good man who couldn't run a private business but who knew he could lecture the rest of the world.

The real heros of the sixties were the hard hats in NYC. I remember them confronting the hippies in Manhattan. I have little doubt that just as McGovern was far outside the mainstream and therefor was crushed, Obama will be defeated by a much wider margin than most people currently predict.

The difference between Obama and Osama is just a little bs.

Rick, you are REALLY GOOD, thanks for another great post.
When I watched I saw NOTHING last night, NOTHING of how they are going to fix these problems and even though Michelle's kids are adorable she did not move me in the least. At least she said she LOVED AMERICA, but only said it to take the heat off her offensive comments before. She missed an opp to really let us know about her husband and only came across as a dems wife who wants more entitlements that us taxpayers have to suffer thru and only barely mentioned the troops.
Lets see how hill does tonight and I can't wait to hear Bill try to restrain himself from making this all about him.
By the way, as much as I regret that mr. kennedy is going thru a hard time right now, he nor caroline moved me in the least.

Well put, since I am from that same era I know of what you speak. But I think, in hindsight, it was really all about getting a really nice house in Marin/SF/Berkeley and then playing NIMBY as hard as possible. Their words of 1972 do not match their actions of today. If Obama looked like he was from Oakland instead of East Africa, Marin/SF/Berk wouldnt have given him the time of day, much less the millions of dollars that have fueled his campaign.

The statement ". . .that government was a utility, not an engine of change. . ." is a patently false one. Government policy has fueled change in the United States many times.

-The majority of Americans now us seat belts-due to government intervention.
-The majority of Americans no longer smoke-due to government intervention.
-Americans no longer own slaves-due to government intervention.
-People who do not own property can vote-due to government intervention.
-People are no longer locked up in poorhouses-due to government intervention.
-People are not allowed to abuse their children without penalty-due to government intervention.
-People can no longer be forced to work endless hours each week-due to government intervention.
-Children are no longer forced to work in sweatshops-due to government intervention.
-Women are no longer forced to endure sexual harrassment without comment-due to government intervention.
-Most poor people are not forced to do without health care-due to government intervention.

This is a mere drop in the bucket of positive changes pushed into existence by government intervention. Liberalism and activist government has been successfully labeled as evil and as black as Snidley Whiplash's villanous heart, but that does not make it true. Anyone has the right to oppose government as a change agent due to heartfelt political beliefs. It is not true, however, that government cannot and has not acted as a positive agent of change. It can, it has, it will.

I agree with your main point that the contest should be won with full disclosure by both sides about their true philosophies of government.

The truth is, however, that neither main stream candidate (if they are to be main stream) can afford to redically depart from the status quo. It is only around the margins that they can actually change when it becomes time to govern. Rhetoric is one thing. Governing another.

Dan Smith said -
"But the responsible side of me doesn’t want to go through the clean up process required in the aftermath nor listen to the whining Left complain that things got worse because not enough of their ideas were implemented."

This is the one thing that should sober up all Americans. The damage that can, and probably will happen will take at least 1 -2 generations to fix. And the argument regarding why it didn't work has been used by all the failed socialist states. In fact, they are convinced that socialism failed because they didn't try hard enough to reprogram/re-educate the opponents.

For Dan Smith who doesn't want to go throught the "clean up process" after Obama wins. How about the clean-up of the Bush debacle? Could the country be in any greater debt? His "no tax, but spend, spend, spend" policy has dug a hole all the way to China -- and they're filling it with loans. He's ignored the looming Social Security disaster and told Americans the key to affordable health care is not getting sick. Lets not forget his brilliant foreign policy, too, illustrated oh so perfectly through insight such as looking into the eyes of Putin. Yeah, good call George. Rebuilding America's credibility will take more than the next presidency and we've seriously lost some military clout. What could possibly get worse, Dan? I guess we could have more home foreclosures and $10/gallon gas, but the GOP and FOX News would blame that on Bill Clinton. You'll have to remind me again of your problems with Obama, because I'm too busy dealing with all the ways Republicans have screwed us for the next generation.
