The hard left will be as kind to President-elect Obama as the hard right was to President Bush - in other words, they'll treat him like crap if he doesn't do PRECISELY what they want!

Of course it's wrong in both cases but hey, unhinged politics seem to be the order of the day. How else explain the tragically flawed reasoning that led so many conservatives to sit on their hands in 2006 (and possible in 2008) because President Bush had "offended" them! Bunch of crybabies!

I think BHO will have a very difficult time putting off the hard left. Remember the hard left has significant influence of congress and the senate and will be pushing to get their agenda enacted. If Obama pushes back too hard he will only infuriate the hard left and risks losing support in 2012.

Speaking of 2012, why are we already thinking of the next election? I thought the last two years of campaigning was more than sufficient, in fact I would like to see a shorter campaign season.

Watching his choices and implied choices, I'm inclined to believe he's going to try and stay more to the center. He will have to throw the hard-left a bone here and there, the question is what bone will he throw.

"Will the hard left push Obama over a cliff?"

Like the hard right push Dubya over his cliff? Not likely.

You are absolutely right. The real left-wingnuts will be below the radar, making lives miserable and validating their sense of entitlement to do so. While I think Obama's heart is with these folks, his head is to act the pragmatist with an eye to re-election. If that should happen, God forbid, the Big People's Seats also will be populated with these loons. Oh, and there will be no headlines between now and 2012 about what bubbles beneath the surface, only rants such as yours, also unknown to most voters. It portends badly.

Just like Bush ignored the conservatives Obama will do the same when he looks at the at the significant political down side of supporting their schemes. He does not have much choice, with the deficit he inherited there will be little room for much of an increase in spending even with a tax hike. With a Democratic congress Obama will have more of a problem with his base but the blue dog Dems and the remaining Republicans can serve as a check. The problem will be when the left turns on the blue dogs and funds candidates to run against them in the primaries. That will be the recipe for disaster in that any candidate that appeals to them will not stand a chance against a Republican in the general election.

Now why doesn't it surprise me that the first group to get pissed off at Obama is NOW, when his campaign paid female staffers less than men, and he "snubbed" Hillary for the VP nod (or so the feminist gossip goes)? lol. I still was surprised they endorsed him. Oh well. I suppose this is just the first group to realize Obama may not deliver the sparkling world of liberal perfection that they are all hoping for. Reality bites.

By the way, I find it interesting that this issue of this Harvard president's comments coming back to the forefront since I am a female computer science major. What disgusts me is not being the only female in all of my classes. What disgusts me is when these diversity-obsessed professors step in and try to change the outcome of competitions so that there is always a female in the winner's circle. I have already had to deal with that and I've found it just causes more resentment towards me among the guys. I'd rather just have a level playing field! I suppose I'd never make a good feminist...

Actually, I feel better about the Obama administration based on this, and his recent backing off of cessation of forced interrogation techniques.

Obama is only interested in his power. I don't think - and I believe you agree - that he actually has a hard core set of beliefs. I'm sure there has been some assimilation based on where he has spent his formative years and adult life, but I get the feeling had he moved to Houston after college, he'dhave taken a much more conservative view on most things.

He isn't going to do anything that will upset his applecart for 2012 - which is why we aren't going to see a radical change of our policies towards captured terrorist. Obama knows that if he shuts down Guatanamo, outlaws waterboarding, and stops wiretap activities - and we get hit again, the Dems will be voted out of office in a landslide that made 1994 look tame.
