One need only observe the spectacular success of the interrogation of Khalid Sheik Mohammed to know that torture absolutely works..

Nope, not at all. Khalid said ANYTHING to stop the torture.

Khalid Shaikh Mohammed stated at a Guantanamo Bay hearing that he murdered the Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in Karachi in 2002, though Pakistan has already convicted a terrorist named Omar Saeed Sheikh for the slaying,

SCENE I WANT TO SEE:

Chloe grabbing Janis by the throat and slapping the stupid out of her while screaming "ACCESS DENIED BITCH!"
Yeah, that's good stuff right there
Peace out

Actually, I think in the Obama world, where the senate confirmation hearings this morning of Hillary indicate to me that the delusions of the left are alive and well and sadly in control - I think a lot of conservatives will relate to a few heroes shoved in a warehouse trying to save the world while all levels of the US government are corrupted and disintegrating into people more concerned with the comfort of a terrorist than the lives of millions of Americans they supposedly are there to protect.

i thought one line overlooked in the media was also revealing of the authur's views. Bauer is talking with an agent who is criticizing the senate hearings and Bauer says, more or less, that he welcomes it. that having kept so much secret for the last couple years, we have created 2 americas. and it was time for people to know what it takes to keep them safe and pass a judgment.

Interesting political theory. The two americas he is talking about, is not jon edwards silliness, but the division between those who get it, when it comes to thte threats we face, and those who don't.

Except what he says can't work. Secrecy is a necessary element in effective warfare, especially against an enemey like what we are facing.

Our new President is now seeing what a president actually faces and we can only hope he will figure out he has some campaign promises to break.

The whole series has been about blowback from prior actions. Even in series 1 the whole plot turned out to be about blowback from a mission to assassinate another man years prior.

All very ruminant and polysyllabic, but tonight's double episode (hours 3 and 4) indicates that (a) torture gets results that save lives* and (ii) handwringing gets you smashed in the nose with the butt of a pistol, even if you're a SAIC.

Somewhere, Andrew Sullivan is crying into his pillow.

*for Good Guys on television... I'm not making light of actual, real live Saudi/Saddam/Iranian-style torture.

Jack told that pompous senator he was willing to be judged by his fellow Americans, not the elected pompous. We ordinary Americans know that the Constitution does not mandate collectiv suicide.

Sure, Jack did some soul searching. But, note in the office where the techie dealer was holed up before being shot, he was willing to stick a pencil in his ear to get facts. The real problem is that our culture is so wussy, so PC fearful of offending anyone(including the Islamofascists, or African dictators, or Hispanic dictators, that it would take an Angel with wings and swords to to justice in our MTV world. Jack knows, though a bit jaundiced, that evil must be confronted and if needbe, it must be destroyed not paroled. That the cultural critics don't like him, mostly lefty eunuchs, so what? And yes, the series did lose viewers, but Americans who still have standards of right and wrong and believe that Presidents and our protectors sometimes have to go the limit to stop real evil from happening, not some waxed up 'waterboarding', will understand Jack's reticence in taking all out moral righteous stands because the powers to be want to bloviate how democratic and legal they all are with sooooo much tolerance for evil that a generation ago would have been trounced in the dust by almost everybody but the liberal wussies of those times.
