Escapism. Yeah, I think we conservatives will be seeking it out more and more over this new error...er...era. By far my favorite character over the run of this show has been Chloe. Somewhat obsessed as my fellow 24-ers would agree. My favorite moment will always be when Chloe picked up the M16 and while in perfect Marine Rifleman form, proceeded to put multiple and deadly accurate rounds into some deserving scumbags. Priceless. I jumped higher out of my seat than I did when Doug Flutie completed the Hail Mary pass in the 85 Fiesta Bowl. I also can't stand Janeane Garofalo's character and think she can't act, although, it's hardly an objective opinion since I utterly detest her and that surely affects my opinion of her acting. I also think that we are in for a fairly tempered season. I thought I had read somewhere that Joel Surnow was either loosening the reins of control or backing off completely. Certainly, this new error of 'change' seems to have influenced these first 4 hours. While I understand why the show is trying to explain the 'why' behind Jack's motives for torturing, I think most Americans don't need an explanation. The resulting absence of any mass casualties is explanation enough.

[...] But Right Wing Nuthouse is pretty reasonable and quite the opposite of a nuthouse. Plus Rick Moran’s running commentary on this season of “24″ is spot-on. One of the things that makes America the greatest country in the history of the world is that liberals and conservatives alike can join hands and agree that Chloe is awesome. [...]

Hey Yoda, don't worry. "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy", no pun intended here. "24" like any work of fiction is a device for escapism. It has attracted a huge and diverse viewer base which includes the left-wing crowd. The lefties wasted no time getting their collective thong in a wad over real or imagined torture scenes that haven't even materialized yet. It's amazing, all this angst over a work of fiction. Speaking for myself, with the exception of the NFL and "24", I don't waste my time staring at the tube. I'm grateful for the once per week R & R plus this forum to speculate with kindred spirits in the effort to outguess the script writers. We promise to avoid coercing you to watch or comment.

The "hypothermic" scenario is real, as someone previously commented. It slows down metabolism and oxygen use by the brain--otherwise you've got about six minutes before you devolve into a large vegetable--or worse. It's usually done with cooling blakets or ice, though, and I don't know of any injectable compound that has the same effect.( I'm an R.N.) I am rooting for Janine Garofolo to be the "mole." Not because I think it's plausible, but for the selfish desire to see her tortured, mercilessly and repeatedly. (Couldn't we just lock her in a room with Sarah Palin and a deer rifle for a few moments?)
Don't worry, Yoda. I have my fantasies AND I move forward!

Jack B is a fictional character. That means he is a fantasy. Don't we have something better to do than read King Arthur stories and wish Camelot will return?

Come on Conservatives. We cannot move forward if we live inside our own heads.

mpro:
POTUS as mastermind of "White Knight" seems intriguing but far-fetched. We've already had one extremely sneaky president, another (even for good not ill) would be contrived. (heh, contrived) If it comes from the White House, there will have to be plausible deniability. Could be Chief of Staff (?) Kanin, who is so set up to seem like a bad guy that he's GOT to be a good guy in the end.

Juan:
Good catch re Chloe's ring. I hope we see Morris again -- one of the best written and most tragic characters from last season.

I stand corrected on the compound--hypothermic it is. My advanced years are beginning to take the toll on my hearing, which is vitally important for musicians in general and jazz musicians in particular. Thanks Arthur for the heads up. Even with the advantage of watching over and over on 'Fancast'--which already has the four episodes available to view free of charge (God bless Fancast & their sponsors), I still hear 'hyper'. Looks like I'd better C# or I'll Bb, pun intended.

The problem I have with this season is the premise of the President's dilemma. Is it not a "no brainer"?

The NSA guy (or whoever he is) said it would take about 6 days to create a new firewall and eliminate the threat against the US. SIX DAYS! So, just pull back the troops, buy yourself sometime, fix the firewall, then kill all the bad guys.

Okay, so in the six days it takes to fix the firewall more "innocents" will be killed in some foreign country. That sucks, but you are the President of the US after all...

The sense of urgency feels somewhat (okay a lot) contrived.

I think the ultimate sponsor of operation "White Knight" is POTUS herself. The writers will want to ultimately portray her as a heroine.

> Tony was injected with a ‘hyperthermic’ compound?

HYPOthermic. They lowered his body temperature (mainly his brain) until they could get him to place where they could do whatever surgery was needed. It's becoming standard practice on heart attack patients in New York city. (but I don't know about the injection part - that might be 24-tech-babble)
