The two flags I possess are cared for intensely. The biggest one flies proudly on flag days facing the street and waving in the breeze. The smaller one was given to me by the honor guard at Arlington when they buried my Father there.

It is encased and on display in my study along with my Father's portrait, and a candid picture of him as a young officer in ancient flying togs standing in front of an old biplane of the 30's.

Deep meanings go with my flags. Thank you for this post, Rick Moran.

Great post. I served in the US Submarine Force for eight years. Among my most prized possessions are the two US flags, given to me by my commanding officers, that flew over USS Abraham Lincoln SSBN-602 and Submarine NR-1. My biggest regret is that I have reached an age where I can no longer don the uniform of our country and once again patrol the perimeter of the free world. God bless America and all those who proudly serve her at great personal risk and sacrifice.

Great post Rick. My flag is put up every day. And while I watched it this morning, I realized that our Arizona sun has slowly faded it to look like the opening of "Private Ryan"! Must get a new one before the 4th!
Thanks again for the reminder of what stands behind our national symbol

Great post!
I was explaining this to my wife (a newcomer to America via Hong Kong) Friday night as we drove by a storage building site with a tattered flag and she wondered why I was pissed.

Throughout my childhood and even now, whenever I saw the flag, I thought of everything the country I was blessed to be born in has overcome and accomplished, feats few other countries have even wholeheartedly attempted and fewer succeeded in. Whatever our faults, we have had a glorious history and truly made an impact for the better in the history of mankind. It is an instantaneous beacon of pride, hope and strength.
