OBAMA DROPS PRE-EMPTIVE RACE BOMB

The 2008 Presidential race finally got underway yesterday as Barack Obama used his race to try and innoculate himself against criticism:

Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama said on Friday he expects Republicans to highlight the fact that he is black as part of an effort to make voters afraid of him.

“It is going to be very difficult for Republicans to run on their stewardship of the economy or their outstanding foreign policy,” Obama told a fundraiser in Jacksonville, Florida. “We know what kind of campaign they’re going to run. They’re going to try to make you afraid.

“They’re going to try to make you afraid of me. He’s young and inexperienced and he’s got a funny name. And did I mention he’s black?”

He said he was also set for Republicans to say “he’s got a feisty wife,” in trying to attack his wife Michelle.

We expected it, of course. It is his greatest political weapon and he will use it again and again, shamelessly accusing the GOP of bringing up his race (even, as this proves, when they don’t) in order to deflect criticism away from he and his wife for anything they say or any associations in their past.

The press will let him get away with it because they are terrified of being accused of racism themselves.

What makes Obama’s race card such an effective weapon is that it is virtually impossible to accuse him of using it. He is the oppressed minority. You don’t question oppressed minorities in this country. Anything they define as racism is accepted almost without question. To do so is to prove your racism. Ergo, the perfect “Catch 22:” If the GOP denies Obama’s charges of “racism” and accuses him of using the race card, the blowback on the GOP will be “Who are you to question a black man when he says he’s been slimed by a racist smear?” – the subtext being that you are racist for questioning him.

The flip side of that is if the GOP says nothing, the charge goes unanswered and they are convicted in the court of public opinion as racist pigs.

Bee-utiful.

Let me just say to those doubters who may believe otherwise, take a walk through the comments section of this blog and others. See how many Obama advocates simply dismiss any opposition to their candidate as “racism.” It is this simple minded sophistry that the candidate will use in order to quiet opposition to his programs once he is elected as well.

It has been asked “Is America ready for a black president?” Maybe a more relevant question would be “Can America see through a racial charlatan who will shamlessly use the color of his skin to avoid debating the tough issues and call his opponents “racists” for disagreeing with him?”

This piece appeared in slightly different form at The American Thinker

UPDATE:

Karl at Protein Wisdom and I are on the same page today:

Make no mistake: the man who admits he looks like Urkel is sounding about as post-racial as the Rev. Al Sharpton. Or about as post-racial as someone who spent the last 20 years under the spiritual tutelage of the race-baiting Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Fr. Michael Pfleger. Someone with that background ought to have some humility when it comes to dealing the race card, but he has chosen it as his opening gambit. If John McCain and the GOP allows someone who increasingly sounds like someone struggling to suppress his own prejudice to frame the general election in this manner, they will deserve to lose the election even more than they already do.

UPDATE II:

Getting more comments than normal on this one (Thanks, Glenn!) so I have removed comment moderation for the time being.

Everyone behave themselves. No jumping on the furntiture and please don’t put your little hands in the garbage disposal unless you’re sure it’s off. Daddy will be back in the morning.

How typically Republican of you, Antediluvian or perhaps just late 19th century. Aren’t you tuned in to the 21st century? Character is a MYTH, old fashioned at best, a self delusion at worst. If “Character” meant anything to modern day Americans, would we have a Senator Kennedy, Kerry, Byrd, Murtha…?

I picked the low hanging fruit here, there’s LOTS more on that tree, Both D & R. The only difference between the two is that the self deluded R’s can be shamed into resignation once caught. The self-aware(?) D’s have no shame.

While being repugnant intellectually, identity politics worked in the past when the candidates were both white. White candidates were free to use identity politics without fear of breaking the fragile coalition of competing interest groups defined by race, class and gender.

The paradigm has shifted; an “identity protected species” is running against the status quo white candidate. What a wonderful opportunity for our nation to transcend identity politics in judging candidates as human beings.

Unfortunately; rather than transcending identity politics, Obama exploits the politics of the past when it suits his needs. This strategy is a double edged sword that divides while pretending to unite.

Christopher Hitchens rightly said “People who think with their epidermis or their genitalia or their clan are the problem to begin with. One does not banish this specter by invoking it.”

Instead of tasking us forward, this whole discussion keeps us anchored in the past. And, if Obama continues on this path, he will give John McCain an opportunity to win.

The change candidate? yeah RIIIIGHT! Can you say old style Chicago machine politician? As much as I despise MCcain he does have a few good attributes one of them being he keeps his word, I gotta tell yah the thought of pulling the lever for MCcain is getting easier and easier.

I’d never vote for the charlatan Obambi and don’t care if the moonbats consider that racist. Whatever his color or sexual preference he rots on so many levels. I don’t see why media fears racism charges. Of course they are already head over heels in lust with Urkel. Hopefully the privacy of the ballot box will have thinking people judge this corrupt clown for what he really is.

Are you already ashamed of yourself ? Or do you have any such thing called shame? Give me an effing break – imagine a White Senator with 2 years experience ( the last 2 years dont count as he has basically been campaigning) trying to pass himself as a future President – no one who is SANE will give him a second look.

Obama is in this position most definitely because of liberal white guilt for God’s sakes ! He is the affirmative action candidate – he gets bonus points for being black and his exotic background – how else can an empty suit, a crook from Chicago with zero experience even get elected ?

If MLK was alive today to hear what Obama said he’d probably die of embarrassment.

What Obama proposes to do in the realm of taxation, with a compliant Congress, will plunge us into a deep recession. Gasoline prices will not reduced by additional taxation of oil companies. Fuel prices affect the cost of all daily necessities. They hit the construction worker the hardest. He must drive to get to his job. The contract tradesmen also must drive to get to jobs. The self reliant will be driven to poverty. Never mind the issues, Obama’s answer is the “race card”. “They’re against me because of he color of my skin.”

    Post-racial racism…

One of the Democrats’ favorite tactics in recent elections has been to play the victim by falsely complaining of vicious attacks by Republicans. Take 2004, for example. Democrats (and especially their candidate, John Kerry) loudly screamed Don’t you …

  17. 17
    still liberal Said:
    4:24 pm

Obama’s comments about people pointing out he is black are the race card, whether it invites criticism or not. Every candidate for President is subject to intense criticism from the opposition. I have yet to hear any responsible Republican politician mention Obama’s race in a negative manner. It is not likely that we will hear this either. Obama is subject to the opposition creating doubt about his experience, youth and policies. If you want to call that fear, so be it.

It is inevitable that some ultra conservative 527’s and blogs will create racial whisper campaigns, the same type as Romney faced as a Mormon and McCain endured in his last run concerning the “black baby” issue. Ultimately, it is simply not necessary to make any appeals to people who will vote against Obama based simply on race. His race is self-evident. So is his inexperience, kooky friends, and doubtful policies.

The latter are fair game for criticizing him as it is with any politician. The way out of the Catch 22 is to call bullshit when it occurs. Fair minded people will know the difference between a racist attack and a fair criticism.

This attempt at a pre-emptive strike is futile. Worse, it only opened up the ‘race’ issue in this campaign.

Furthermore, it reinforces my observation that the REAL ‘racists’ are the ones who throw that card first. He would have been better advised NOT to have mentioned first; waiting for the opposition to be so stupid as to mention it.

Therefore, as I see it, HE is the real racist here.

No doubt that’s true, just as some Dems, Independents, Greens, and Libertarians are racist. Anyone who denies that is living in a fantasy world him- or herself. One could even point to the founding of the Republican party (formerly the Free Soil party) specifically as an anti-slavery party, and thereby question whether the GOP has fewer racists than the rest. But that’s really beside the point, isn’t it?

The point is that this salvo is the latest of Obama’s many, many attempts to preemptively cast his opponent in a negative light. The earlier attempts labeled any discussion of Obama’s connections to some remarkably unsavory, bigoted and/or ultra-left wing characters as a “distraction”. He never explained why those kinds of associations should be considered irrelevant. Understandably so—they never have been for any other presidential candidate.

In fact, considering Obama’s thin legislative record and his self-branding as a “post-racial”, “hope and change”-y candidate, the questions and criticism were especially on target. It’s a lame offense-as-defense strategy, partly because it’s so transparently self-serving and also because most objective observers can easily see through it.

And now this even more dismaying hissy fit. As much as it may please some of Obama’s politcally correct base, who thrill to the thought of racism exisiting in every heart but their own, to the rest of us it simply looks like the same old politics—painting the other guy into a corner he can’t escape from, no matter what he says or doesn’t say, while labeling yourself the virtuous one without the hard work of actually doing anything virtuous.

Anyone who buys “hope and change” at this point has truly drunk the Kool-Aid.

Must be that people expect everyone with a ‘D’ after their name to be a liar. Only thing they didn’t lie about was their statement ‘put us in control of congress and we’ll do something about high fuel prices’. They were 100% honest about that if something includes increasing the price over 100% and destroying the economy in 17 months. In any other world Reid and Peeeloshi’s head would be setting on a pike outside congress.

This one is easy to turn around. It is implied that we should NOT vote for McCain because he is white. Hence, Obama runs a racist campaign. But he does so by exploiting the racism of liberals who would have nothing to do with him if he looked like he was from Oakland instead of east Africa. The emperor has no clothes, but the liberals cant say so because they are bound by the rules of “polite company,” which Obama can exploit all the way to the White House.

He has used the “polite company” weapon several times—once against Biden, effectively silencing him, and praising Al Sharpton in the process (a UN ambassadorship perhaps in the offing for AL ?), another time at a speech in Austin, allowing the audience to reinforce it’s stereotypes when he declared himself tough because he was a black man from chicago, and another, of course, over the very rev Wright.

McCain should ask again for Obama to go with him to Iraq, and if he declines, start insinuating it’s because Obama is afraid to do so. After all, Obama had to wait for a “proper” audience to make the “absent fathers” speech, instead of at his church of 20 years, despite many years opportunity to do so.

I’m not voting for him because he is way too liberal, just like I wouldn’t vote for Ted Kennedy or Dennis Kucinich. Skin color doesn’t mean anything to me except when he pulls out the race card. I knew it was just a matter of time.

No doubt that’s true, just as some Dems, Independents, Greens, and Libertarians are racist. Anyone who denies that is living in a fantasy world him- or herself.

I read a few articles during the Dem primaries in the south where Democrats admitted to reporters that they couldn’t bring themselves to vote for a black man. What does that tell you?

What will probably end up happening is people will not vote for but say they did. That way they can vote their beliefs and avoid the ‘racist’ label.

Obama is not setting this argument up for the General election. He has that in the bag. He is setting this up to stop criticism of him when he is President. Obama knows that the press will, at least to some degree, eventually start to publish negative reposts…particularly when he begins to press for the more socialist of his agenda. They’ll be racists if they do so, and as good liberal myrmidons it will stop them in their tracks.

He will also shut down blogs that are critical of him by directing his Department of Justice to investigate any negtive posts by major bloggers as Hate Speech. He’ll make the kangaroo courts of Canada’s HRC look like the high school moot court.

The 2008 race will be remembered as the first that hinged upon racism and sexism. First the liberal press and pundits hammered Hillary for being an arrogant female, which she is indeed, and second, for hammering McCain, because he is white, and old, also facts. The philosophical corruption entailed by the liberal philosophy, pushed forward with Nat Hentoff’s, and Moynihan’s 60’s, spurious implication that “equal” and “equivalent” mean the same thing, has achieved fruition in the Obama candidacy, who is an empty suit (even more so than Jr, Doonesbury notwithstanding), with the right skin tone underneath, namely, caramel, rather than actually BLACK.
Obama is not a racist. However, he is very clever at exploiting the racism of his liberal supporters, especially the Bay Area crowd, his economic heartland. Their hatred of Bush Jr., and the fact Jr. successfully cheated to “win” in 2000, not to mention their easy obfuscation over the fictional WMDs in Iraq by the incredibly corrupt Cheney, has led them to overcompensate for their earlier failures, to the degree that they want to be against anything white, to assuage their multiple levels of liberal guilt trip. Their Ivory Towers are now considered bastions of righteousness by none other than themselves even though they continue to avoid Oakland like the plague, and have nothing to say when the city manager thereof gets rounded up in a police action against gangsters (happened just the other day).
However, his campaign has made a mistake in playing the race card so overtly because there is no need to even mention his race (which is, exactly, what?) in attacking him. All that needs to be done is to remind voters that he is a spineless, and perhaps cowardly (considering his reluctance to got to Iraq) superliberal.
If you want to get at his jugular, ask him how he feels about reparations…, and will he cut and run…, and has he ever had a REAL job…?
There are a million ways to get at him, but the right wing doesn’t know how to do it because they are trapped by their own absurdities, and idiot George.

WEll, you can’t judge everyone based on a few personal observations of a few people, but here goes.

I grew up in the Detroit area, and racial attitudes between blacks and whites were hardened. Among those 30 years old+, I believe the antagonism persists. And that’s among both blacks and whites.

Blacks want “one of their own” to be President – and this is apparently true not just in Detroit but across the country. At least among those whites that I know, there is significant resistance to him because he is black. And these are liberal Democrats I am talking about! They’re not really paying attention to the primaries or election politics yet. This resistance is based on the virulently racist rants of Rev. Wright and Obama’s closeness to it.

I would say that racial politics are all around us on both sides, but I would not call people’s voting plans “racist”. Prejudiced, yes. Racist, no.

If you are CERTAIN that based on Rev. Wright’s sickening commentary that Barack Obama would be a President that agrees with Wright’s vomit-worthy pronouncements, then you are prejudiced. There’s as much to point to that indicates the opposite of that, as there is that would indicate that he actually is radicalized alongside Wright.

Or I can put it this way: I tend to be an Ayn-Randian Libertarian. I am VERY comfortable listening to people rant and rave about needing to return to the gold standard. Yet, were I President, I would never even bring it up, nor would I ever act upon that preference for the gold standard. I should not be judged as intending to implement the gold standard, simply by enjoying being around people who advocate for the gold standard. It’s a prejudice-based mistake.

There is a world of difference between what is a intellectual exercise – promoting the gold standard – and listening to speeches designed solely to create and amplify racial tensions. A decent person would leave the company of a “mentor” who consistently spewed things the decent person found morally objectionable.

Hardly. Senator Obama sat through all the vitriol for 20 years. One can surmise, rather effectively, that he either agreed with what the ‘good’ Reverend was saying or he was balancing his checkbook at the time. Or maybe he was simple ‘asleep’.

There’s no ‘prejudice’ in any of those thoughts. Simple observation. And it has nothing to do with his skin color either.

So….what’s your point? Are you projecting ‘prejudice’ or something else?

I disagree with the interpretation of Wright’s comments as being “racist.” They were merely repetition of standard liberal dogma, which I have personally heard many times from the mouths of white folk—minus the “goddamn,” of course, because they are secularist.
Attacking Wright’s remarks as being racist entails the risk of being called one yourself. But attacking them for being superliberal dogma, repeated as they are, in every major liberal university town in America, now that’s fair game, and easy pickins, too.

Maybe the Republican retort should be we are not interested in the color of your skin but the content of your character.

This would mean a lot more if so many of you didn’t insist on seeing “evidence” of bad character in the most mundane and innocuous behaviors of people with different skin colors.

That is another key indicator of being a ‘racist’; if you base your vote on the race or ethnic background of a candidate, for or against.

Another possible sign you are a racist is that you find it impossible to imagine any reason fthat any white could possibly vote for him except out of “white guilt” and that the only reason blacks vote for him is the color of his skin.

Sure, because its impossible that people might actually think that the guy is actually qualified. No, that would be impossible.

What a surprise. Obama goes 18 months of a campaign without pulling the race card, then he mentions it once at a fundraiser and you come down on him like it’s his identity. If race isn’t such a sore spot for you, then why do you react so violently towards it when it encompasses about 1/10000th of the material he’s said in the past week? Just take a look at your column:

    Barack Obama used his race
    He is the oppressed minority.
    oppressed minorities in this country
Anything they define as racism is accepted
    black man
    black president?
    racial charlatan
    the color of his skin
    Rev. Al Sharpton
race-baiting Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Fr. Michael Pfleger. someone struggling to suppress his own prejudice

Can you try any harder to create an “us” versus “them” mentality here? I don’t really await your response, because it’s predictable. “Look, look, the commenter is doing exactly what I thought he would!” You mean you make a post that tries to mock minorities while identifying Obama with them much stronger than he has ever identified himself as such, and we’re not supposed to call it what it is?

What the fuck do you think a political race is all about except “us versus them” you nitwit? You Obama people scare the shit out of me – looking for a world where everyone agrees about everything – just as long as what people agree on is what you think.

Obama is the one who is playing identity politics – and doing so for the most anti-democratic, dictatorial reasons imaginable; he wants to inoculate himself against any criticism at all. Your candidate’s skin color isn’t at issue; it’s the thickness of his skin. He can’t stand people disagreeing with him.

You have an authoritarian, anti-democratic mindset that makes you more dangerous than Nixon, Bush, and any other 5 presidents put together. Get your head out of your ass and recognize the fact that there are two sides in this debate. Believe what you want but don’t dismiss your opponents as racists or “dividers” of the American people when their only crime is that they disagree with your political views.

IS OBAMA FAILING TO WIN BECAUSE OF RACE?
Interesting article, however it would be even more interesting to see the same kind of analysis if the black candidate was Colin Powell, or Condelza Rice. If the black candidate had more experience, and didn’t vote present over 100 times … was not so far to the left … did not propose such radical changes to our society, such as a socialistic agenda … did not have negative associations, such as 20 years tied to a Reverend Wright, and other radicals … Threw his close friend of 20 years under the bus for personal gain …did not have a Muslim name, father and step father, just 6 years after 9-11, and while America, and it’s allies is in the midst of constant attacks from murderous Muslim terrorists … was properly vetted from the beginning … did not enjoy such overwhelming biased favoritism from the media … did not arrogantly create his own Presidential seal … did not disrespect historical American institutions, and traditions, as a way of selling his Change message … did not use accusations of race in response to every opposing argument … did not flip flop on important issues … chose Hillarry as his running mate … as well as several other substantive factors.
