By now, you’ve probably been made aware of the despicable attack on Jeff Goldstein’s family from a University of Arizona professor of psychology named Deb Frisch. If you’ve been out of circulation lately, you can get the story from Blackfive here.
Short version: Frisch made a series of what can only be termed threats against Jeff and his two year old son. The threats were both violent and sexual in nature, referring to the Jon Bennet Ramsey case and expressing the desire that Jeff’s son suffer the same fate.
This is not hate speech. Nor is it name calling. Nor is it, as the good professor has tried to minimize on her blog “over the line of nastiness.” The only line it is over is perhaps a legal line that should, if there is a prosecutor on the ball in Tempe, Arizona, result in Frisch being frog marched to either the nearest detention center or wrapped in a straitjacket and thrown into a rubber room at the local insane asylum.
Aberrational behavior on the part of one loony lefty? Or symptomatic of an ideology that enables and indeed encourages its adherents to see political opponents as sub-human or retarded and thus, expendable?
We apparently will not fully discover the answer to that question because there has not been one single blogger on the left – not a one – who has seen fit to condemn Frisch’s threats against Goldstein and his family. This despite the fact that the story has been out there for more than 48 hours, an eternity in Blogland.
And then there’s the curious coincidence of two separate denial of service attacks on Goldstein’s website. I will be very interested to see where that DOS originated from and why it occurred when it did. As I write this, Jeff’s blog is still down and he has informed PJ Media that he won’t be up for a couple of days.
High profile conservative bloggers like Michelle Malkin and Little Green Footballs have been hit by DOS attacks in the last several months and the company Hosting Matters (Instapundit, Powerline, Captains Quarters among many) has also been under constant assault. Is this the best the left can do? I may simply not be paying much attention, but has this level of DOS attacks occurred on lefty sites? It wouldn’t surprise me necessarily if it did but the fact that the attacks on righty bloggers seem to be more frequent in the last 6 months or so, one has to ask the question; what are liberals so afraid of that they feel compelled to silence their most visible critics?
All of those bloggers who have called Goldstein a “paste eater” are nowhere to be found when it comes to policing their own ranks and thus have aligned themselves with Frisch and her criminal behavior. Silence implies assent in my book. And the fact that liberals have taken absolutely no interest in this incident is deplorable. Ann Coulter comes out with one of her loony toons remarks about killing Supreme Court justices and several dozen righty bloggers, many of them prominent, jump down her throat. Deb Frisch threatens physical harm against a two year old and gets a pass from the left.
What does that say about the moral fiber of the netnuts? Methinks they ate it to improve their regularity.
UPDATE: FROM THE “THAT WAS QUICK” DEPARTMENT
Michelle Malkin is reporting that Frisch has evidently “resigned.” Or been fired. I won’t link to the criminal’s blogsite but Michelle has the gist of the post:
...wrote some inflammatory comments at a blog by a guy named Jeff Goldstein called protein wisdom that infuriated many bloggers and commenters. Many of these bloggers emailed my boss at the University of Arizona to tell on me.In hindsight, the things I wrote were over the line of nastiness. I apologize to Mr. Goldstein.
I have resigned from the University of Arizona so there is no need for other enraged people to write to administrators there.
The loon is also playing the victim card:
Some blogs have posted comments that I perceive to be physically threatening. I have contacted the FBI and the Pajamas Media staff to determine how to proceed with this aspect of this unbelievable experience. My intention in this post is to de-escalate the situation. The comments that started this all were nasty, not threatening. But I feel very threatened by the response.
Jeff – I lost my job. You won. Could you call off the troops?
After picking my jaw up off the floor, I decided to see if any liberals were taking her to task in the comments to the post. Here’s one:
You really succeeded in making liberals look like psychopaths. Can you do the rest of us a favor, and either stop posting entirely, of join the Republican Party?
Well…it’s a start. Kit, one of the hosts of Wideawakes Radio (WAR Radio) which is set to re-launch tomorrow morning summed it up nicely in her comments:
You post a large number of comments on a conservative blogger’s site that not only make references to killing, but also sexually abusing his 2-year-old child. (And that’s not counting the insults to his wife.)
When confronted by a number of readers and bloggers from both sides of the aisle, you post this drivel that portrays you as a sad, penitent victim, violated by the teeming masses of rabid conservatives who like nothing better than roasted moonbat. You forgot one thing.
You started all of this.
No self-respecting American (indeed, no self-respecting parent regardless of location) would allow someone to come and talk about molesting their toddler without getting a bit…well, parental. When you have other liberals telling you that “You really succeeded in making liberals look like psychopaths,” perhaps it’s time for a reality check.
Jeff didn’t send us. We’re not Jeff’s minions. We are, however, people who think that if you’re going to conduct yourself in a manner that is inappropriate, then there are consequences for those choices. You made a really bad choice, and guess what? People saw it. People expect that you see some consequences for that choice – especially when some of them were paying your salary at the University.
If you’ve truly quit your job, then I’m glad. You are not qualified or competent to teach American college students.
Frisch can evidently dish it out but not take it as she has apparently deleted several comments from the string on that post.
Finally, a commenter called “Liberal Avenger” weighs in with just the proper amount of compassion and stupidity:
I was under the impression that you were/are suffering from some sort of mental illness in making those comments. If that is the case, seek help – but don’t resign from your job. You needn’t lose your job because of this.
You have apologized. You have made it clear that your intent was never to cause anyone real harm (as if Jeff Goldstein or anybody else ever thought for a moment that anyone was in actual danger…)
1. Call your boss and tell him that you are un-resigning
2. See a mental health professional if you aren’t seeing one already
3. Ignore the hypocritical wingnuts here who pretend as if what you did was some enormous crime against decency. It wasn’t. What you did was stupid and misguided. Conservative bloggers are masters at being stupid and misguided.
Poor wittle Debwah. All she did was refer to a two year old in a sexual manner and make threats against his person. I mean, after all, the kid belongs to a conservative so anything goes, right?
Maybe Mr. Avenger and Frisch can go a-vistiting to the same shrink.
UPDATE II: 7/9
I see where this site has been linked by a couple of liberal blogs who are complaining that I’m asking them to “apologize” for Frisch’s behavior when the mad doctor is a nothing blogger and that after all, what goes on in Iraq is the real obscenity.
I can find no mention on any conservative blog of anyone asking the left to “apologize” for not posting on this subject. But a little solidarity with the right in condemning this outrageous and frightening behavior would have been appropriate and appreciated.
As I mention in the post, this story was out there for 48 hours (6th story from the bottom of Memorandum on early Friday morning) and nary a peep of condemnation was heard from anyone on the left until Confederate Yankee’s post about the silence of the left on this issue was disseminated. Then, there were mostly mild rebukes of Frisch made in passing with the real thrust of most lefty writings being that they shouldn’t have to “apologize” for Frisch and that conservatives do it too, or do it worse.
And I refuse to back down from the statement that liberalism “enables and indeed encourages its adherents to see political opponents as sub-human or retarded and thus, expendable…” When most major league lefty bloggers can refer to Goldstein as a “paste eater” and Ed Morrissey as “retarded” I would say that it becomes understandable why Frisch’s statements would not be condemned and, under most circumstances, probably applauded by the likes of TBogg, Maha, Jane Hamsher, Digby, and the unheavenly host of lefties who believe themselves to be the moral and intellectual superiors of conservatives.
What the freepers did in encouraging harm against employees of the New York Times and their families was despicable and they should be roundly and soundly condemned for their advocacy of such action. The same goes for anyone, anywhere, of any ideological stripe who advocates violence or harassment of any kind against anyone.
That said, politics is a full contact sport. And liberals who whine about being called out for either their rhetoric or lack of moral courage should take their complaints somewhere else. Don’t bring them here.

There is always another moonbat idiotarian who can’t make the connection to the gravity of the situation. I provide here a comment by one of her supporters:

It is funny to see people who applaud and support Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Rush Limbaugh, etc. get offended by this. Nothing wrong with it, mind you, just very, very funny.
And the unsupported slander that (unidentified) leftists have launched coordinated attacks on conservative websites is also patently ridiculous. I suppose Kos gave the order, eh? heh.
(Wasn’t it just last week someone wrote about NYT employees, “hunt them down, find out where their children go to school…”)
2:58 pm
[...] Confederate Yankee – noting that yesterday several “progressive” bloggers were busy taking the right to task for “incivility – and he is wondering when or if any blogs from the left will give some heat to this woman or, at the very least, admonish her as you have seen right-wing bloggers do when one of their own crosses a line. So far, he doesn’t seem to have found any leftwing bloggers shaking the finger. Rick Moran is also looking for some condemnation from the left. He hears crickets. [...]
3:23 pm
Confederate Yankee seems to miss the point that this woman acknowledged that her comments were wrong and that she was wrong to post them, and she apologized to the victim. She also resigned her job. She paid a heavy price for her stupidity and insensitivity.
The same cannot be said for the right wing college professor who encouraged people to hunt down the children of NYT employees, including of the photographer whose name and home address and phone number his pal published. Or for the wingnut who runs stoptheaclu.org, Nedd Kareiva. He was proud that the Jewish family whose names and home address he published was driven from their home by harassment and fear. He considered it a victory. (See Jesus’ General.)
So, Confederate Yankee is criticizing the wrong side if he is sincere in his concern that people be held accountable for their actions. Hopefully, more people will see that regardless of ideology, public words can indeed do harm (including to those who write them), even if they are posted from the safety and privacy of your mother’s basement.

Joe Said:
“Hey, look over there!”

So, Joe. Do two wrongs make a right?
I’ve always wondered.
4:05 pm
“Joe” can’t just say what the woman did was wrong, and save his conservative-bashing for a more opportune moment. He lacks the taste and self-control for that.
Is anyone surprised?
4:09 pm
“The same cannot be said for the right wing college professor who encouraged people to hunt down the children of NYT employees…”
Wow, a Frisch supporter thought up a, what a coincidence, “right wing college professor”, previously unreported, who did the same damn thing!
Next, it will become liberal CW to cite the Judeo/Christian hijackers who crashed airliners into the Supreme Court building.
I have soo much respect for liberals, these days.
4:12 pm
Yep. The apologists are everywhere. That ‘apology’ was not much of a real apology. Joe is evidently more than willing to defend the indefensible.
Oh, and the Liberal Avenger has previously been banned from Protein Wisdom’s comments, so maybe he has an agenda, too.
Basically, a not-too-untypical Lefty went even more unhinged than most and is getting a group support hug from way too many lefties.
Assuming she is certifiable (which I posed in the comments at PW two days ago), why have all her ‘friends’ ignored her problems heretofore? She’s been engaging in behavior not much better than this for some time. See Prof Bainbridge or Steve Verndon.
I guess she has a lot of ‘enablers’ in her corner. Not an unexpected event.
4:29 pm
A minor point, Rick, but Univ. of Arizona is in Tucson, while Arizona State Univ. is in Tempe.
6:30 pm
I’d be real interested to hear from Joe, with citations, when and where Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh threatened anybody. Take out Coulter and her “rat poison” line and you won’t even find Malkin or Limbaugh wishing for the death of someone they disagree with, solely because of the disagreement.
There’s a particularly vile breed of moonbat flying around lately, and I suspect Joe is one of them.
10:00 pm
Talkleft.com- that blogger condemned the attacks and repudiated the vile and insane woman who made them. She did it with grace and without any backtracking.
Joe, I have criticized Anne Coulter before, but I don’t recall her ever making death threats and sexually suggested remarks about a child as this Deborah person did. Do you? Where?
The child is two years old, and this Deborah person talked about french kissing him and making sure there was lots of saliva. I want to vomit on my keyboard even repeating that. I cannot imagine how I would feel if somebody actually came to my blog, picked a fight, and then responded by a remark like that about one of my children.
It’s completely out of bounds, and that woman needs some serious therapy and help. That isn’t a political issue, it’s a mental health issue. Acting like a crazy person didn’t just act like a crazy person does not help them. It’s cruel.
And btw, that apology and alleged ‘loss’ of a job? She lied. Shortly afterward she started accusing Jeff of making up some of the remarks that she made and claiming that the DOS attack was engineered by him to hide and alter the evidence. She now says that she was going to resign anyway, and she hasn’t been in Arizona for a while. She’s posting from Eugene Oregon, where she’d rather live. I just hope they have the right sort of hospital care for her, because I think she’s a danger to children.
I seriously cannot imagine what sort of sewage is in her head that she could even think of the things she said about Jeff’s baby, or anybody’s baby. Normal humans do not juxtapose those sorts of images.
She also told Jeff that he wasn’t even human to her, and since she cannot even bring herself to refer to the innocent child as anything kinder than ‘pathetic progeny’ it’s obvious she has dehumanized an inoffensive, innocent toddler just because of his father’s politics. That’s not okay, and I have no respect for anybody who cannot simply acknowledge that without making it equivilant to adults who rag on OTHER ADULTS, however obnoxiously.
10:10 pm

10:36 pm
Ok, someone..please, PLEASE tell me this is a secret site run by “The Onion”. I’m begging you.
Everyone on “the left” is supposed to know what’s happening at “Protein Wisdom”? May I ask the obvious..since when do right-wingers do such things?
And Coulter only says that liberals should be hanged as traitors, laments that the NY Times wasn’t bombed by McVeigh, pines for assassination for Clinton if impeachment doesn’t work, “kids” about poisoning a Supreme Court justice…I don’t even remember them all.
The Malkin-Powerline bunch just calmed down from acting like irresponsible madmen and women about a Times story on Cheney and Rumsfeld and you’re all hyperventilating again? One RW blogger suggested his readers GO TO SCHOOLS (sorry, needed emphasis) of the NYT editors. Did you condemn that? Did Malkin condemn that or feed it? If not then this loony suggestion that one crazy person represents all liberals is pretty damn loathesome itself.
This woman should be dealt with through the law and it’s despicable, of course. But don’t expect the world to revolve around a guy who screams about slapping people with his dick, all the time. And maybe people don’t read the comments since they’re usually cheering the guy on.
Damn. Could you people grow up? Important things are gong on. Seriously.
10:41 pm
Just to be clear – I’m not dismissing a threat.
I’m denouncing a bizarre attempt to use this as a partisan weapon. It’s self-centered, childish and doesn’t say much for real concern over the issue.
Just act like adults. Please.
12:29 am
One problem with the sanctimonious handwringing about the “left” blogs failing to condemn the woman is that no one knows who the hell she is. And no one is suppoting what she said, if they even know about it.
Another problem is that her target has an insatiable habit of flinging feces (and penises, even dog penises) at other people in extremely disgusting diatribes. So, to the casual observer, the wrong here appears to be basically that some unknown blogger has flung smellier feces at Jeff than what Jeff routinely flings at others. And she apologized for it. Not a lot to get excited about for most people.
Be that as it may, I have already seen four liberal bloggers post their disapproval of the comments, and TBogg even provided a satirical apology.
12:40 am
Yo T4: So condemning inexcusable activity is not “acting like adults”?
I don’t care if it is partisan or not! I don’t care if it was done by a Democrat, Republican, Socialist, Communist, Anarchist, or even the Anit-Christ! Deb Frisch didn’t just cross the line. She didn’t just make a few regrettable remarks. And she has been doing so as an oft-quoted representative of the Left. (By the way, Ann Coulter has gotten slammed by quite a few pundits on the right, myself included.) But with the right so buzzed by this episode, why isn’t there some comment from the left, except comments like yours trying to put some sort of partisanship spin on the episode!
Crickets? Rick, I don’t even here that coming from the left. But there is that rancid smell coming from that direction.
1:23 am
Rick, why would I as a liberal blogger who has never heard of Deb Fritsch before post anything about this? She’s plainly out of control and disgusting, but it’s not like I or any other liberal blogger I know has ever paid her any mind or defended her or praised her. If she were on my blogroll I’d have lots to say (and she’d be gone in a flash). Crickets have always been chirping around Deb and should be – she’s no one. To make it seem like it’s a liberal omerta is absurd. I find her distasteful, but why on earth should I be expected to blog about her?
I like the way DeputyHeadmistress parsed its point here:
Joe, I have criticized Anne Coulter before, but I don’t recall her ever making death threats and sexually suggested remarks about a child as this Deborah person did. Do you? Where?
She has indeed made statements that are close enough to “death threats” to quality, and Deputy knows this (she wrote she’d like to see a plane fly into the NY Times buiilding, as we all know). But no, she never was quite depraved enough to include children in the threat. So Deputy is technically correct, thanks to an artful phrasing of her question.

Mr. Happy:
Developmentally challenged, are we? Can’t read? Can’t write?
Perhaps you missed the part where I wrote that apologies are unnecessary and are in fact a strawman set up to deflect justified criticism against lefty bloggers for silently assenting to Frisch’s idiocy.
Condemnation is the order of the day – not apologies. This is something you would know if you, like, you know, READ WHAT I WROTE rather than mindlessly pasting something from that pustule of a blogger TBogg.
5:35 am
To Joe:
re: NYTs, where the kids go to school.
The comment you refer to was probably in response to the travel piece that revealed where the camera was, where the wife shopped/dined, fellow villagers questioned re: Rumsfeld/Chaney and how to get to their houses (the description was better than GPS).
Kids are off limits… period. I still can’t compare (maybe it’s me), how it compares to sexual abuse comments. One is concerned with how they would feel if their info was published… the other… well, is really out there.
7:37 am
Back when I was inside the NYC theater world Frisch-speak was the norm and, though I left two years ago I’ll wager, still is. Deb Frisch just aired in the open what the Left really believes, thinks and says behind the scenes. They would do stuff like placing a photo of Bush and Laura on the toilet seat so that everyone could piss and poop all over Bush, amuse themselves with talk about the ‘retard children’ of ‘repugs’, wail on those ‘uptight Christers’ who don’t know how to pole-dance etc, etc.
My theory as to why this type of dialogue continues is that politically correct thinking allows for Frisch speak to exist as the norm. In their world it is perfectly acceptable to be threatening, vicious and nasty towards anything perceived as conservative because everything else is off limits. Group-think restricts dissent and whenever their vitrol was called out instead of acknowledging their words as vitrol the response instead was always ‘What are you a Bushie’. Shelley stated ‘the poet is the unacknowledged legislator’ and when emotionally disfunctional people like Frisch are influenced by such poetry contrived by those who need a faux enemy to attack (in today’s world it is the conservative)they believe themselves justified in airing their irrational emotionalism.
Deb Frisch took what was said in the green room and brought it out onto the stage.

Ken, you and your fellow travellers just don’t get it. Flame wars don’t involve sexually explicit acts with innocent children, nor death threats against them. This was vicious and sick. The fact that you can’t admit as much shows just how morally bankrupt you yourself are. Have you no shame? Have you no decency?
This is why your side of the aisle can’t win elections. The depravity you excuse so blithely shows everyone with at least an ounce of credibility and humanity what monsters lurk on the Left.

[...] is not only fair play; in this case, reciprocal linkage offers a worthwhile distinction to Gentle Readers: … Rick Moran outlines a responsibility for lefty bloggers to condemn the attack on Goldstein or effectively endorse it via silence. While I often agree with Moran, and certainly agree with many of his larger points in the post, I’m not buying the argument – even someone as hypercritical of Goldstein as Atrios has no duty to comment on the actions of an online nut who shares no direct affiliation to him or his site. But much more indicative of a rotten core to mainstream swaths of the online leftosphere is the extent to which things like BitchPhD’s subsequent rationalizations and minimizations of Frisch’s behavior both exist – and will be tolerated or validated by ideological fellow travelers. [...]
6:06 pm
Deb Frisch is not a professor at University of Arizona (Alma Mater of mine, BS Mechanical Engineering, and highest in affection from me, compared to the other colleges/universities I attended such as RPI, Westpoint, Evangel University (BS Psychology), Cal State Fresno MS Engineering). I don’t know her.
Rather, she was an instructor. Pretty far down on the totem pole from a Professor.
6:55 pm
Excuse me Ken. But you dismiss Frisch’s invective as just so much flame war.
Flame wars do not target innocents, and they do not by any measure condone or support the utter malignancy of what your friend wrote.
I stand by my estimate that you are indecent, immoral and depraved.
7:12 pm
Setting aside the limp wristed attemps at a weasily worded defense of the seriously dysfunctional Dr. Dembto Frisch, there were dozens of us on the site the 4th when she launched into her diatribes, and every one of her posts, in all their vileness, were duly recorded, and immediately forwarded to the Portland FBI AIC for their review. So this latest “modified her posts” prang isn’t going to cut it.
BTW, in all fairness I’m seeing some on the left really upset with her claimes they support the things she’s done, and condemning her in no uncertain terms, but of course you’re always going to have the hard core true-blue moonbats that will take a defensive position no matter how feckless.
Any wonder why they’re considered a cult, childish, and not to be taken seriously. Coupled with the meltdown over at Kos Kiddie land, I expect at some point before too long the DNC leadership is going to stuff Dean and his Deaniacs in a large laundry bag, and cut them loose.
7:34 pm
Gang of One…..flame wars do all kinds of nasty stuff. I’ve seen as bad and worse than this over the years. You are welcome to your irrational, emotional assessment. It’s immature, but understandable given Deb’s comments. It is, of course, that immaturity which allows the rabble rousers to blow this thing into a great big deal.

Any wonder why they’re considered a cult, childish, and not to be taken seriously.

And she did so fully aware of the many documented instances of sexual harassment Arnold engaged in. You see, she met him once…and Fox News was showing interest in her.
So, she’s not always a straight walker even if she claims to talk left.

Quite interesting thread.
Rick, While it would be nice to read some condemnation from the left, I am not sure that their silence proves unexpected. Rather, the more damning actions are the justifications.
As to flame wars, I have been in a few in my day, and acted less than adult in some instances, yet I CANNOT concieve of a reason to hauling children into the act. Maybe I’m just not as enlightened as our friends.
Politics ain’t beanbag. Used to be a day where the politicians would wage verbal battle by day and drink together by night. That was a long time ago. Perspective, is long gone, particularly on the internet, where one only has a keyboard and doesn’t have to “face” ones opponent.
I might say, given a choice, flying a plane into the NY Times building would have been a better result on 9/11, yet if that choice were actually taken, my reaction would not have been different. Even though I find little of substance or value to reside there, they are like me Americans, and if they were attacked, we all would have all been attacked. I do wish that there was a little kinship comming from the other side. Well you can’t have everything.

Was this loud enough? It’s the largest megaphone I have access to right now, and I cranked the bastard up to 11.
And to answer the question of whether I’m to the left of Jeff Goldstein, click the link on my name to see my main blog. Definately a Democrat saying exactly what you’re reading.
You may now send me links proclaiming me the semi-sensible one.
Oh, and Turing word: drunk, Don’t comment when drunk, especially when you’re a lightweight.

What this woman said was vile, and she is probably a pretty disturbed person, but it was not a death threat — please cut the bullshit.
If you do consider saying that she’d rejoice in hearing of the kid’s death to be a death threat, what’s your take on this post by Thomas (admin of RedState, one of the biggest conservative blogs, not some obscure unknown nobody like this woman):
“I repeat: Should the entire American Left fall over dead tomorrow, I would rejoice, and order pizza to celebrate. They are not my countrymen; they are animals who happen to walk upright and make noises that approximate speech. They are below human. I look forward to seeing each and every one in Hell.â€
By your own standards of what is an expression of murderous intentions, isn’t Thomas up there with Hitler and Stalin? Actually, he’s even worse—Hitler and Stalin never tried to murder half their countries’ population, you have to go to Pol Pot for that.
This stuff is regular fare in mainstream conservative blogs — those with the largest audiences. On the liberal side you’ll only hear it from people on the fringes that nobody reads (and thank God for that).

[...] But what’s so very confounding is that of all the countless right-wing bloggers who spent the weekend so very horrified about the comments of that influential political leader of liberalism, Deb Frisch, or who lamented that she wasn’t condemned aggressively enough for her idiotic comments to Jeff Goldstein, none of them has condemned these calls by their fellow prominent right-wing blogger for American journalists and Supreme Court justices to be hung by trees until their necks snap (indeed, one of the right-wing bloggers joining in the weekend sermons against this mean Deb Frisch rhetoric was that Beacon of Right-wing propriety, Misha himself). I have just condmned Ms. Frischs’ comments at my blog – but I find myself wondering how many Conservatives will apoligize for Ann Coulter’s latest screed in which she calls for the deaths of new york times Reporters and Editors.
Not very many I would think.

[...] OK, time to recap. On the one hand, we have a psych(o) professor leveling threats against somebody’s toddler. On the other, we have one blogger prone to overheated rhetoric, plus three commenters on that same blog whose combined notoriety pales in comparison to Frisch’s. From this, we’re supposed to infer some sort of pattern, I guess. But what’s so very confounding is that of all the countless right-wing bloggers who spent the weekend so very horrified [...]
