HAVING THE COURAGE OF YOUR CONVICTIONS
CATEGORY: Ethics

I find myself this morning asking a question that’s been gnawing at the outside of my consciousness for days now. Why is it that the advocates for Terri’s death don’t have the courage of their convictions and push for a quick, painless death rather than this agony of thirst and hunger being endured by an otherwise healthy but cognitively disabled woman?

Is it any more proactive to give Terri a lethal dose of drugs than removing her feeding tube? Both actions will have exactly the same effect; the death of Terri Schiavo. But where one would be very quick and relatively painless, the other option entails a grotesque litany of symptoms that most people wouldn’t wish on a rabid dog, much less a human being.

I think that the way someone dies is relevant. Even if you believe that Terri’s life should be snuffed out, how can you wish it to be done in such a harrowing manner? According to some estimates, there are as many as 25,000 adults living in the United States who are as severely or more severely disabled than Terri. I guarantee you that the relatives and guardians of these poor unfortunates are watching this case very closely. If the government in the person of the state and federal judiciary get away with this (and all indications are that Terri will not last much longer) there will be a virtual avalanche of petitions before the courts.

Am I being an alarmist? I sincerely hope so. But the burdens-both emotional and financial-of maintaining the life of a cognitively disabled person are very great. It would make it easier for even a loved one to rationalize the death of a spouse or a child by claiming that “this is what they would have wanted” if the standard of proof used by Judge Greer-the testimony of a conflicted spouse-is accepted as a baseline for proceeding against these individuals.

It does no good to say that each situation would be reviewed on a “case by case” basis. The fact is the legal precedent will have been set. I don’t think proponents of euthanizing Terri realize what makes this case different; it lowers the bar for ending life. To those of us concerned that the culture of death is making serious inroads into the mainstream of American values, allowing euthanasia to achieve the status of something that’s routine rather than a process that should be used in only the rarest of cases with clear and unambiguous legal and moral rationales, would be a travesty.

Which brings me back to having the courage of your convictions. If you’re really serious about wanting to lower the bar and allow this death to occur by starvation, I accuse you of being a moral coward. If you can justify to me that by sanctioning starvation rather than out and out euthanasia, advocating a position that’s coherent both morally and intellectually, I will retract that charge and apologize. But if you can’t find any arguments to buttress your support for starving someone to death and denying water to an individual until their tongue swells up and their lips erupt with excruciatingly painful sores, then perhaps you should ask yourself why.

Why not just demand the government open up euthanasia centers where people can bring the old, the senile, the incurable, the severely cognitively disabled – those weakest links in our society whose lives have no meaning because they can’t enjoy being human to the fullest due to an injury or affliction? I submit that this is the logical and inevitable outcome of the position you are advocating.

Do not try and tell me that “she won’t feel anything.” Those who’ve been present at these kinds of deaths (and I was horrified to learn that they occur every day in this country) know differently. Even a dumb brute of an animal feels pain, despite not knowing what is happening or why. That’s why we euthanize our beloved pets with a shot.

If we did to them what the government is doing to Terri, we’d be arrested, tried, convicted, and sent to jail. What does that say about the value we place on human life?

I’m listening. Convince me.

UPDATE:

Ed Morrisey has a post about the nurse, Carla Sauer Iyer, who cared for Terri at a nursing home and claims that Michael was adamant about not giving Terri any rehab:

Iyer also claims that one time when she put a washcloth in Terri’s hand to test her reflexes, Michael Schiavo would get upset and say, “that’s therapy — take that washcloth out.”

The Captain also calls this case what it is:

The federal court has instead decided to disregard the clear language and intent of the emergency bill passed by Congress and abstain from a new process of finding fact in Terri’s case. In doing so, they will allow a non-terminal, disabled woman to die a slow death on the word of an estranged husband and his years-long repressed memory. It will be the first federal endorsement of euthanasia, a precedent setting case that will allow for the disposal of many such disabled people in the future.

Get used to it people. As I mentioned above, this case will open the floodgates.

UPDATE II: GRANDSTANDING GOVERNOR?

Ace reports that via a tip from Alicia, if the Florida Senate passes the anti starvation measure today, Jeb Bush will go to the hospice and bring food to Terri himself.

This is really starting to get on my nerves. The intervention by the US Congress was distasteful, but necessary in my opinion. But with the National Right to Life Spokesman Randall Terry running around breathing fire against Republicans who he will hold “personally responsible” if Terri succumbs and asking President Bush to use “police powers” to save Terri, it appears that some of our right wing brothers are attempting to play a nasty political game here.

And into this charged up, emotional atmosphere, Florida Governor and putative Presidential candidate Jeb Bush rushes to the rescue like Dudley Doright rescuing Nell from evil Snidely Whiplash. Even if the Governor would be doing this from the purest of motives the appearance of doing it for political gain will now color every action he takes and every statement he makes.

That’s the price you pay for the scrutiny given by the national press. Your every waking thought will be analyzed as it relates to some mythical horse race. And in that context, the Governor’s instincts here are just plain wrong.

Let the parents feed their child if the law passes. They don’t need anyone from the government to help them do that. After all, they were doing it while Jeb Bush was still in books.

CELEBRATING DEATH
CATEGORY: Ethics

What do you say to people who are celebrating the imminent death of a human being as a defeat for a political enemy?

Since Terri’s feeding tube was removed on Friday, I’ve been absolutely flabbergasted at the celebratory attitude taken by many on the left (not all; there are many liberals who support Terri’s fight) and the flippant comments in liberal discussion forums and in comments left here and other conservative sites about Terri’s condition.

Here are a few choice examples from the Democratic Underground:

Are Terri and Michael not on speaking terms? Have they been fighting? Alright, I think I’ll go scream now.

I think of some of the great hunger strikes throughout history like Bobby Sands being jailed as a political prisoner with the IRA and the Women Suffragists of the early 1900 and well, this Hunger Strike rates up there with that guy who lived in a box hanging over the river Thames for 30 days without any food.

Go ahead and starve yourself dumbass!!

And here’s one from Daily Kos:

Culture of life, my ass. Support bacteria. It’s the only culture some people have

There’s more…much more. But I just don’t have it in me today to get mad at these revelers in death whose comments on my own blog were so despicable, so vile that for the first time since I started my site, I had to delete some comments.

Here are some examples from my own site:

Well, your blog certainly is appropriately titled (Rightwing Nuthouse). How would you suggest putting Ms. Schiavo out of her misery? Oh, wait a minute, I forgot -you guys dig torture so you probably want to keep her alive as long as possible. Here’s the part I don’t get: If you’re a Christian fundie, shouldn’t you be happy that Terri’s going to meet her God? Why would you want to rely on evil, evil, badevil science to prolong her earthly agony?

Part of my response:

First of all, I’m an atheist you miserable excuse for a barking moonbat.

Secondly, it’s hardly “science” that’s keeping her alive, unless you want to call feeding tubes that have been in use since the turn of the 20th century “high tech.”

How about this moonbat accusing me of seeking political gain from Terri’s plight:

Another disgusting post from the right wing.

Don’t worry about those inconvenient facts, one of which is that TS has no content to her consciousness, therefore has no capacity for suffering.

But, as you have already discovered, she has the capacity for something more useful – being a political tool to advance your religious agenda. Good for you for figuring this out. But may God have mercy on your soul for acting it out.

And in my response, I pretty much lost control and let the lickspittle have it:

I’m not in the mood for your fallacious and ignorant comments.

You’re a “compassion nazi” and if you come back in about an hour you can read my post about people who would rather make a political point knowing full well that Terri is going to have her tube re-inserted and allow her to suffer another day of thirst than stand aside and allow a simple human impulse to be compassionate rule the day.

Even dumb animals with no higher cognitive functions suffer, you bastard. And the fact that you and your kind have started us down a path that, like the Doctor used by attorney Felos in the Terri case advocates, will end up euthanizing people who are SPOON FED.

Perhaps we’ll see a day in our lifetimes when committees will be set up and human beings will have to justify their existence on a yearly basis. If they can’t… oh well, let’s do the compassionate thing and euthanize them.

If you can’t see that this is the way we’re headed, then I pity you. Because I can think of no one more useless than someone like you; you’re a triple threat…no brains, no soul, and no clue.

My reference to the feeding tube being reinserted was in anticipation of Judge Whittmore’s decision to issue an injunction to feed Terri while the case was adjudicated. Many legal experts today are expressing surprise and shock that Whittmore heard only 1/2 hour of oral arguments from each side before rendering a decision. It’s almost like he just wanted to wash his hands of the entire matter.

I had commenters accusing me of being a paid Republican consultant (I’m not) and obscenity laced rants against me, republicans, and President Bush.

Then there’s this comment on Terri’s lack of self awareness:

She is a person with no brain equipment that permits a subjective sense of self. Therefore, she cannot suffer.

You don’t like this fact. It’s not in your interest to examine it. By not doing so you are being disingenuous. That’s OK. The internet is good for nothing if not sophistry.

Your entire “Spoon fed” thing: OK idiot. look up types of fallacies. Have you come across slippery slope yet? No? Keep looking.

Again, I lost my temper:

Well, I’m glad that SOMEONE has now come up with a scientific way to measure consciousness. Whew…I was getting worried that nobody would EVER figure that one out.

Don’t be daft. The major problem here (and it’s pretty obvious “ignorant” was an apt characterization of the state of your knowledge on this issue) is that the tests needed to determine whether or not Terri is PVS HAVE NOT BEEN DONE!

There were worse comments. I deleted a comment about Terri having the brains of “my front lawn.” I also deleted a comment that was glad that Terri was dying because it meant that Michael would be free to marry his common law wife who, in this person’s opinion, would be a better wife for Michael because she wouldn’t be a burden to him.

Some of it, of course, is just plain ignorance. But most of these comments are from people who could be your next door neighbor or a co-worker. To have that level of callousness requires a world view completely at odds with the principles this country and the rest of western civilization were founded on.

Where is this leading? Watch over the next few months as a spate of cases come before the public. Many will be from relatives who wish to rid themselves of a financial and emotional burden. Some will be from relatives who wish to profit from the death of the euthanized victim. Each time it happens, it will be easier, outrage will be muted, and the idea of what is “permissible” will be expanded.

There may be no way to stop it. All we can do is keep fighting for what we believe in while enduring the snide, snarling, and snarky comments of our tormentors.

JUDGE WASHES HIS HANDS OF TERRI’S CASE
CATEGORY: General

U.S. District Judge James Whittmore has, like Pontious Pilate, washed his hands of Terri’s case letting stand the Florida State Court’s decision to remove her feeding tube:

A federal judge in Tampa early this morning denied a request from the parents of Terri Schiavo to reinsert a feeding tube into the brain damaged woman.

U.S. District Judge James Whittemore wrote that Terri Schiavo’s “life and liberty interests” had been protected by Florida courts, the Associated Press reported. Despite “these difficult and time strained circumstances,” he wrote, “this court is constrained to apply the law to the issues before it.”

The next stop in this excrutiating process is the 11th Court of Appeals. Since Whittmore ruled that the Schindler’s case has little chance of winning on its merits, the prospects in the Appeals Court are very slim.

And since these lower federal courts refused to hear the case, it’s extremely doubtful that the Supreme Court would do anything to stop what is now a tragic near certainty; the slow and painful death of an American citizen at the hands of the judiciary.

HEY MOONBATS! HERE’S SOME MORE PEOPLE YOU CAN KILL!
CATEGORY: Ethics

My post yesterday on what it would be like to starve to death generated some of the most disgusting, revolting, and nauseating comments ever posted on this site. I was amazed. I was flabbergasted. I was appalled. For the first time, I felt it necessary to actually delete comments from a post due to the vile language and outright hostility of so many on the left who accused me of everything from being a paid Republican consultant to a religious fanatic (I’m an atheist).

At any rate, the thrust of the argument against Terri is that she has no cognitive abilities left, that she has less brains than, as one commenter put it, “my front lawn.” And that nobody should have to live like this or nobody would want to live in this manner.

Okay…I’ll bite. Here’s some more afflicted individuals you compassion Nazis can line up against a wall.

SEVERELY RETARDED

About 3-4% of the mentally retarded are considered “severely retarded.” What does that mean?

Children are classified as severely retarded when their IQ scores fall in the range of 20 to 40. This group accounts for only 3 to 4% of the mentally retarded population. The severely retarded have poor muscle coordination and limited communication and self-care skills during early childhood.

Some but not all of these children will never be capable of feeding themselves, of being toilet trained, of having a single normal relationship with another human being, and are totally dependent on someone else to take care of them. They might not qualify as having the cognitive abilities of “a front lawn” but perhaps we could describe them in terms of having the brains of a bush or a shrub. You feed them, they grow and that’s about it. I wouldn’t want to live like that, would you? Off with their heads!

SEVERE SPINA BIFIDA

Here’s another candidate group for your execution conga line; infants with severe spina bifida.

Already, the compassion Nazis who brought us the Groningen protocols have taken to executing infants with severe spina bifida. The problem is that it’s not always clear that the infants (who are in excrutiating pain and have little chance of leading anything close to normal lives) deserve to be murdered. The fact is that the Groningen protocols were not designed to set guidelines on when to euthanize someone, they were designed to keep doctors and other health care professionals out of the slammer for carrying out the murder in the first place! Don’t believe me? Here’s a blurb from an article in the NY Times about Dr. Eduard Verhagen, the infamous Dr. Death, who designed the protocols:

He and his colleagues started familiarizing prosecutors with difficult cases, even including them on daily rounds.
.

And they developed a protocol, published this month in the New England Journal of Medicine, that is both a checklist and a how-to-guide for Dutch doctors who are considering ending a baby’s life and still want to stay out of jail.

The problem with this is that no one speaks for the infant. If the parents feel it’s too inconvenient to raise a baby with severe spina bifida, why should a Doctor stand in the way? As long as he follows the protocols, he’s in the clear, legally speaking.

Maybe you moonbats can get the ball rolling on this. I’m sure the ACLU would have some excellent ideas on how to execute these babies without the Doctor having to go to jail.

LATTER STAGE ALZHEIMER PATIENTS

There is nothing this side of hell worse than watching a loved one succumb to the ravages of Alzheimers disease. I know quite a bit about this disease having watched my mother drift slowly away until there was nothing left except the shell of a body and a destroyed mind.

It’s important to know that patients suffering from the latter stages of this excrable disease can take years to die. In the meantime, they scream.

They scream from the time they get up until the time they fall asleep. The don’t function at the level of a child; they function at the level of an animal. I can tell you that when my mother first realized she was drifting away, she pleaded with us to kill her. She had seen her own mother waste away in a nursing home with the disease and did not want to end up like her.

At what point would it have been “compassionate” to just give her a shot and end it all? Who makes that decision? And could you ever be sure that such a decision would be made in the interests of the the afflicted? How could you prevent greedy relatives from simply offing a prospective gold mine?

These are questions we didn’t want to face and wouldn’t have answered anyway. In the end, with the help of some extraordinarily compassionate and loving nurses as well as the loving care of my oldest brother who lived with her, she was able to stay at home until three days before her death.

But, hey! There are enough of these poor unfortunates wasting away in nursing homes that I have no doubt all of you “little Eichmans” out there would, in the name of deciding what kind of quality of life all the rest of us should enjoy, would have no compunction about getting these poor unfortunates onto the scaffolding and into your hangman’s noose.

In addition to the above candidates for your state sponsored murder, I’m sure there are literally dozens of diseases that afflict the minds of people to the point where, in your twisted, grotesque, inhuman cult of death, you’d” be willing to pay the schilling and have them dance with the executioner.”

COMPASSION NAZIS
CATEGORY: General

Representative Robert Wexler is an infected pustule on the body of American politics. His nauseating defense of Bill Clinton during that pond scum’s impeachment hearings in Congress were legendary for the fawning, grotesque and slavish way in which he excused the President’s perjury while skewering Republicans for being hypocrites.

Now this mountebank has decided that, even though it’s a dead certainty that the bill to change the venue of Terri’s legal case from state to federal courts will be passed, Wexler feels it necessary to make Terri Schiavo suffer more hours of the agony of thirst to both prove how “compassionate” he is and to score some points against Republicans.

Evidently, Mr. Wexler’s compassion only includes those who can do him any good politically. If you’re a cognitively disabled woman unable to speak up for yourself, well that’s just to bad. Here’s this abomination of a human being’s rationale for objecting to the House unaminous consent request to pass the Terri bill by voice vote, thus making republicans bring a majority of 218 Congressmen back from their homes on Palm Sunday to vote tonight at 12:01 A.M. Monday:

“Florida courts for seven years have found by a standard of clear and convincing evidence, that it is Terri Schiavo’s wishes that she not remain in a permanent vegetative state,” said Rep. Robert Wexler, a Florida Democrat.

“It is not the place of Congress in the 11th hour in the most abusive fashion to undermine the Florida judicial system.”

There were evidently a couple of other compassion Nazis who felt it necessary to horn in on the publicity generated by the Terri case. Another Florida member of Congress Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz was also objecting.

Think about this. Nothing Wexler and the other compassion Nazis could have possibly done will defeat this measure. It’s in the bag. It’s a slam dunk. By objecting, they have condemned someone who is already suffering the pangs of thirst, going more than 48 hours without a drop of water, to more excrutiating hours of agony.

Even if they believe she is in “a persistent vegetative state,” don’t they realize that she can feel pain? This quote from Shakespear is apt:

“If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?”

Terri’s mother tickles her daughter constantly. Laughter by Terri is one sure sign that there is a living, breathing human being trapped by a mind that’s damaged but capable of some kind of rehabilitation. The fact that her husband has refused that rehabilitation for 12 years is indicitive that he never wanted Terri to get better in the first place.

Terri lies in a windowless room, her tongue swollen, her lips parched, and the more primitive area of her brain, the limbic system, which is unaffected by her injury, is screaming at her to drink water. Her regular sleep cycle (another sign, some neurologists say, of Terri not being a vegetable) has been interrupted.

And Mr. Wexler has the gall to prolong this for no other reason than to appear a hero to the cult of death crowd and the other compassion Nazis?

May he rot in hell.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO STARVE TO DEATH?
CATEGORY: Ethics

I decided to repost this powerful piece from Raven at And Rightly So because of its relevance today. It was originally published on 2/24/05.

Raven at And Rightly So is a medical professional who cares for the aged and chronically ill. Although I didn’t ask her, from her commentary on the following “Exit Protocol” (Ravens comments follow the ~ sign) she appears to have some experience in being present when feeding tubes are either removed or “clamped off.” With permission, I’ve reprinted her post on what it’s like to starve to death.

NOTE: If you’re at all squeamish, I suggest you NOT read the following.

This “Exit Protocol” is a recipe for how to kill someone by starvation and dehydration, and then manage their symptoms while they slowly die.

For instance, the nurses will put lip balm on Terri because her lips will crack, peel, and bleed from the dehydration.
~And her mouth will not open after a day or two…the aides will pry it open to do oral care. They’ll do a good job with it though.

They’ll use body lotion because Terri’s skin will begin to break down and show signs of flaking, drying, cracking, or being parched.
~Hopefully they’ll use a nice scented lotion so Terri can have stimulation. The aides will never forget the smell.

They’ll put a “scopolamine patch” behind her ear to enhance the drying up of saliva and other secretions.
~Can you imagine how your mouth would feel?

“Chux pads” will need to be used-and changed quite often because of incontinence of Terri’s bowels and bladder.
~Only for a few days. Then there will be nothing left to void. Ever had a UTI? That’s what it will feel like.

When Terri begins to writhe in pain (multifocal myoclonus) and she becomes agitated from metabolic changes and electrolyte imbalances due to no fluids or nutrition, the attending staff will have to give her 5 to 10 mg of Valium (diazepam)-rectally-every 4 hours.
~Ha. This will only “cure” the movements, not the pain. She will still have tears.

If Terri experiences a Grand Mal seizure, they’ll give her 15 mg of Valium immediately, and then as needed thereafter.
~Ever have a seizure? It’s not fun. And they can kill you.

When her body shows signs of an inability to breathe by gasping for air (dyspnea), they will immediately give Terri 2 to 4 mg of morphine every 4 hours.
~And the morphine will cause her respirations to decline even further, thus aiding in the process of her death.

And all of this will go on for 7 to 10 days…
~Maybe longer.

UPDATE: 3/20/05

Michelle Malkin links to an unbelievable New York Times piece that says starving to death ain’t half bad:

“From the data that is available, it is not a horrific thing at all,” Dr. Linda Emanuel, the founder of the Education for Physicians in End-of-Life Care Project at Northwestern University tells the New York Times. “In fact, declining food and water is a common way that terminally ill patients end their lives, because it is less painful than violent suicide and requires no help from doctors,” the paper maintains. (emphasis added).

This from the newspaper so outraged by the torture of terrorists.

Someone-perhaps Michelle herself-should set the record straight on this.

THE FOX AND THE GOAT
CATEGORY: Politics

By an unlucky chance a Fox fell into a deep well from which he could not get out. A Goat passed by shortly afterwards, and asked the Fox what he was doing down there. “Oh, have you not heard?” said the Fox; “there is going to be a great drought, so I jumped down here in order to be sure to have water by me. Why don’t you come down too?” The Goat thought well of this advice, and jumped down into the well. But the Fox immediately jumped on her back, and by putting his foot on her long horns managed to jump up to the edge of the well. “Good-bye, friend,” said the Fox, “remember next time,

“Never trust the advice of a man in difficulties.” (Aesop’s Fables)

There are times that Mexican President Vincente Fox appears to look upon the United States the way a parasite looks upon its host; why ruin a good meal by reminding the victim of your presence?

To that end, Fox has maintained pretty much of a low profile since his election in 2000. He has given lip service and not much else to cleaning up the notoriously corrupt Mexican police force even though the DEA constantly complains about lack of progress. And his pronouncements on illegal aliens have concentrated on trying to clean up the smuggling rings that make the journey to America so hazardous for so many.

But yesterday, Fox really put his foot in it. Talking about the grass-roots Minuteman Project, which will patrol the Arizona-Mexican Border for one month starting April 1, Fox complained that such groups represent a kind of “extremism” that poor Mr. Fox finds “troubling:”

“We totally reject the idea of these migrant-hunting groups,” Fox said. “We will use the law, international law and even U.S. law to make sure that these types of groups, which are a minority . . . will not have any opportunity to progress.”

Organizers of the Minuteman Project say they have signed up more than 950 volunteers, including 30 pilots with aircraft, to patrol the border for 30 days beginning April 1. The activists say they will notify the Border Patrol if they see border crossers and will not confront them directly.

Minuteman co-organizer Chris Simcox said participants are exercising their constitutional rights.

“Vicente Fox can rant and rave all he wants, but he obviously doesn’t understand what a democracy means,” Simcox said. “We have been working within the law.”

President Fox is also upset about the proposed “triple fence” to be built in the San Diego area:

Fox also harshly criticized the construction of walls along the border, including a new “triple fence” planned for the San Diego area.

“We are convinced that walls don’t work. They should be torn down,” he said. “No country that is proud of itself should build walls. No one can isolate himself these days.

Fox said he understood Americans’ concern about protecting their southern border. But he dismissed fears that terrorists have sneaked into the United States through Mexico. “We have absolutely no evidence of that,” he said.

A couple of things should be pointed out here: First, if the Mexican government wants to use “international law” to stop American citizens from exercising their constitutional rights, I’d really like to see him try. Even as anti-American as most international tribunals are, Fox would be laughed out of court not to mention skewered by the US government. Second, are you as comforted as I am when Mr. Fox says that there’s “no evidence” of terrorist infiltration of the border? I thought you might be. Someone-maybe in the State Department- should tell Mr. Fox that interrogations of al Quaeda prisoners have revealed plans to infiltrate the US via Mexico.

Maybe the ostrich should be made the national bird of Mexico.

The President of Mexico even felt compelled to jump into the US debate on social security with a novel reason why illegals should be allowed to flood our cities only to be made legal by turning them into “guest workers:”

Fox said he will push for action on a “guest worker” program in the United States. He said that the U.S. population is aging and will need Mexican labor in the future and that turning millions of undocumented Mexicans into legal, taxpaying workers could help keep the Social Security system afloat.

First of all, stop giggling. It’s not nice to laugh at other people’s stupidity. And I think we should show all the respect due to any parasitic, bloodsucking, meddling, nincompoop that we can muster.

That being said, perhaps the President of Mexico would like to explain how any immigrants-legal or illegal- will help solve the social secuirty crisis.

The problem isn’t the number of workers . The problem is the number of retirees. In order to have the same number of workers supporting the same number of retirees today (about 3.5 to 1) by 2050, we would have to have a workforce of almost 200 million! By 2050, there will be approximately 55-60 million Americans of retirement age. That pencils out to needing between 190-210 million workers paying into the social security system just to keep taxes where they are today. Currently, the American workforce consists of about 110 million. That means we’d almost have to double the workforce to make Mr. Fox’s suggestion that we use illegals to solve our social security problems work.

That’s one way for Fox to realize the dream of Azaltan, the movement to “return” much of the southwest and California to Mexico. Then again, given the attitude of our brave fellow countrymen involved in the “Minuteman Project,” I wouldn’t be so quick to take the advice of this particular “Fox” in any circumstances.

UPDATE:

Blogs for Bush
has a similar take:

Here is the President of Mexico, who urges us to tear down our border fences altogether in order to better serve his need to have his unemployable youth stream north, insulting the very Americans who are supposed to put out the welcome mat for millions of illegal aliens.
