AMERICA'S SHAME

I like how many of the pro-torture commenter’s skipped actual arguments and cut right to the ticking time bomb scenario. From what I have read many of the terror plots that have been disrupted have been through surveillance and infiltration of the groups. Can someone please show me an example of where we prevented an attack? Please, no responses saying we could never know because it would endanger the whole operation; I think the powers that be, if they really wanted to justify their actions could come up with on case.

One thing Rick and the other commenter’s have not discussed is what happens when we get the wrong people? It has happened before, especially in Afghanistan where are first prisoners were brought to us by the Afghans themselves (in exchange for money). What do we say to someone tortured into false confession? I am curious what the pro-torture folks think about that?

STILL AT RISK: THE SHOCKING IGNORANCE OF OUR YOUNG

Rick if you are interested in how test taking is wrecking our schools watch the last season of the Wire that deals with No Child Left Behind. I graduated from a back-water redneck High School in Southern Maryland in 1994 and at the time the ONLY thing the school was concerned with was the MD requirements that each student have 4 years of civics, 2 math, 2 science and 4 years of English - if you could get a D (passing) in each of those classes you got your diploma. Making students take classes just for the sake of getting a D is no better than the current NCLB in my opinion - at my HS we had part-time students (they would let you attend until you were 20) that would come in once a day just to take that final English or civics class so they could graduate.

The above comments have everything - McCarthy apologists (#3), the liberals are brain-washing our children (#6) and of course The Capitalist just want to make us slaves! (#8). All that is missing is a comment on how Ron Paul will fix everything!

"GOODBYE, PRETTY GIRL"

My condolences, I have lost both cats and dogs over the years and it hurts like losing a member of the family because that is what they are. Please resist the urge to punch the first jackass that says ‘what’s wrong, it was only a cat’.

FRED VS. HUCK: SUBSTANCE VS. STUPID

Can we start calling him the Republican version of Jimmy Carter? In all seriousness if I were a Republican it would concern me that this guy is doing so well as opposed to the serious Republican candidates. But does anyone really think this guy will get the nomination? I don't but that does not mean that taking the spot-light away from candidates that could actually get elected.

There is one nice aspect (for us lefties atheists anyway) to Huckabee’s campaign: After years of the holier-than-tho attitude from Republicans I personally enjoy watching you eating your own over who is more Jesus-y.

FADING FRED FRAMES THE ABORTION ISSUE

If you want a glimpse at the rift between pro-life realists vs purists go read the comments in the story regarding the Human Life Amendment and Fred Thompson at RedState, I think it is still on the front page. Both agree that abortion is murder but the realists understand that giving the decision back to the states and using incremental change is the best way to go. The purists in turn accused the realists of using 'pro-choice rhetoric' and want nothing short of the immediate reversal of RvW. As a secular conservative it sucks that we have to pander to these people. Since when was the first and foremost cause of conservatives abortion and gay marriage?

RON PAUL: PANDERER TO THE PARANOID?

Paulbots -> swarm, swarm, swarm! (sorry, couldn't resist) I heard many of his fringe supporters, especially those with racist / militia-like attitudes like him because they feel his strict constitutionalist view would do away with firearm restrictions. They reason that the feds use federal firearm statues to bust up their organizations (which the feds do, especially with militias).

CONSERVATIVES TO BUSH: "KEEP YOUR GRUBBY PAWS OUT OF OUR PRIVATE SPACES!"

I think that social conservatives take a very different approach to authority and government then secular conservatives. Ask anyone who considers themselves deeply religious and republican and there is a good chance you will hear how America is a Christian nation that has lost its way because of declining morals. For them there is no issue with giving government vast new powers of watching law abiding citizens; what do you have to hide? they would ask?. Commenter number two is probably one of those folks. It is a shame because I always thought a good conservative 'Loved their country but feared their government.

A RESPONSE TO CRITICS OF MY LAST POST

If you want a laugh Rick go read some of the comments at Ace's site regarding your post -> You are not a conservative anymore but some dirty hippie libtard Kos kid who needs to leave the 'beltway' and get out and see 'real Americans' whose support seems to grow on a daily basis! I especially like the comment stating that despite 'despite Mr Moran's and Mr Beauchamp's best efforts' were gonna win this thing!

This whole time I have been reading your site because I wanted to hear informed, reasonable conservative views only to find out you are a democrat double agent.....

SUCCESS IN A VACUUM

@Tano - if you are interested in seeing the remaining RW that refuses to acknowledge reality please check out this story currently on the front page of Red State.

I always found it ironic that this site is called Rightwing Nuthouse when in reality it provides views from the right that actually make sense.

"NOBODY HERE 'CEPT US INCOMPETENT JIHADIS..."

Quoting from Wonkette is like quoting from The Onion, both are over the top satire...the exception is Wonkette is political satire so some of it is actually true. Also, what happened to fighting them 'over there' so we don't have to fight them 'over here'?
