HUCKADUMB

I’m running out of ways to make a play on words of Governor Goober.

Huckabuffoon. Feel free.

THAT WAS A CONVENTION TO REMEMBER

A contested convention. It's pornography for political junkies. If we could get two open conventions our tiny little heads would melt.

THE VERY DEEP THOUGHTS OF MIKE HUCKABEE

I'd feel sorry for the GOP but they made this deal with the devil back in Reagan's day, telling themselves that they could use the evangelicals but never be used by them. They are to the GOP what the blame-America-first crowd is for us Democrats.

You'd think rational Republicans and rational Democrats might be able to join forces somewhere in the middle. But things are so poisonously partisan that power ends up flowing to the extremes, the furthest poles are charged, and the center cannot hold. What hillbilly beast, its hour come round at last, slouches toward Iowa to be born?

DRUNK WITH RELIGIOSITY

Karen:
Europe is a dying civilization? New York is packed with Europeans buying dollar-discounted luxury goods and running up the cost of good hotel rooms. The EU is now a larger market than the US. Their single biggest economic woe at the moment is that they've been dragged down by American mismanagement of the mortgage market.

I keep hearing prophecies of Europe's demise. Been hearing them for, oh, about 30 years now. And yet, when I visit Europe they seem to be pretty much alive. Go to London and tell me they're dying. Go to Amsterdam or Madrid or Moscow or Copenhagen. If they're at death's door, how is it I'm driving a German car and flying on French/Brit jets and wearing Italian clothing and taking Swiss pharmaceuticals and -- until recently -- using a Finnish phone? Germany alone has a larger GDP (nominal) than all of China. At PPP the EU with just under 500 million people is still 40% larger than China with almost 3 times the population.

Don't take Mark Steyn too seriously. Europe is far from dead.

You know, it's kind of irritating when I wake up, read Krauthammer, and think "I really want to blog on this later," and then bop over here to find that you've already done it. And with more care (and fewer F-bombs) than I would have spent on the topic.

The result is I've lost my excuse for procrastinating on my work. Thanks. Thanks a lot.

WAS MATTHEW MURRAY ENABLED BY THE CHRISTIAN BASHERS?

Christians regularly announce that we godless types are destined -- and deserve to be -- for an eternity of torture in the fires of hell. Torture. Forever. What has any atheist critic of Christianity ever said that is equally horrific?

One cannot state that a person, because of his beliefs alone, not because of any action, deserves eternal torment, and then complain when that person returns rhetorical fire.

I doubt this young man was motivated by the tiny, pipsqueak voice of atheism in the US. I also would not blame his evidently very religious upbringing. Rather, it seems he was depressed and mentally unbalanced. Not the fault of atheists or believers.

It goes without saying that I am very sorry for the families of the victims. If it turns out that I'm wrong and there is a God, I hope the victims are with Him now.

CNN HOLDS GOP DEBATE - MOSTLY

It bothers me more that we had no questions on health care. Six on illegal aliens and none on health care? None on Iran? The dollar? Privacy? The mortgage meltdown (as far as I recall, I may have missed it.)

And why were none of these eight guys able to move the answers onto those more important topics? Hillary could turn a question about her favorite cheese into an answer about health care. These guys stood passively while CNN dictated the terms of the debate.

BUCHANAN'S NEW BOOK: "PREPARE YE FOR THE END"

Nessus:

It has nothing to do with "race." (Mexican is a nationality, not a race.) It has to do with available labor resources. This is a hi-tech and university area. There is no vast pool of unemployed anglos waiting to attach shingle to roofs. Are you suggesting the college professor who lives to my left, or the financial analyst who lives across the street, or the accountant two houses down, will take up home building? I rather doubt it. Sorry if that sounds elitist to you, but the hard fact is: I'm not going to start nailing boards for a living. Someone will have to nail boards. So, who is that person?

We have nearly full employment in the US. Subtract the Hispanic immigrants you and Buchanan dislike so much, where do we find the workers for jobs that very clearly need doing?

Nessus:
As I write this I'm sitting on my porch hearing the workers building a new house next door. They are speaking Spanish. I have no idea whether they are legal or not. But the same guys built my house. In fact, all the houses I see.

The buyers -- myself included -- are non-Hispanic. If we're an elite special interest we're an awfully large one. The elite special interest of homeowners.

Is there some other bunch of guys dying to build homes here? If so, I haven't seen them. I look around my neighborhood and I can assure you that none of us is going into the building trades. If you suddenly disappeared all the Mexicans in the building trades in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area, building would stop. And then the anglo builders, and the anglo tradesmen, and the anglo wholesalers and retailers who outfit all these homes would be in a world of hurt.

Unemployment here is already pretty low. Where do we go to get people to build our homes? And don't give me some vague generalities, I'd like specifics. Where are we going to find literally thousands (millions nationwide) of experienced construction workers once you and Buchanan have had your way?

I was going to comment but culture warriors have kicked in the door and are at this moment rushing up the stairs screaming their bloodcurdling war cry: "Para Espanol, oprima el numero dos."

I'd fight them, but . . .I . . . I've been heteroginized. I'm finished.
