IT'S PAST TIME TO INOCULATE CONSERVATISM AGAINST THE BIRTHERS

#29, there are right-wing "Truthers"; check out Devvy Kidd sometime. Many of the younger 9-11 "Truthers" are extreme libertarians, almost survivalists, including Alex Jones. The older "Truthers" do tend to be from the old paranoid left of the 1970s. The folks who used to think that Kennedy was assassinated because the CIA didn't think he would continue the war in Vietnam.

Of course, the main thing that all "Truthers" have in common, right or left, is that they are crackpots.

I don't know what you're going to accomplish by banning them from seeing your site; seems to me it would make more sense to ban them from posting in the comments, but to let them see your mockery.

I am appalled by the rise of the Birthers; it really gives me cause to wonder how big the 9-11 "Truth" movement would have been on the right if Al Gore had been elected president in 2000.

PALIN: THE WAR CONTINUES

I think you mean "the principals in this scrum"; I see no evidence of principles.

NEWS FROM THE FRINGES

Great post, Rick! The oddity about Hofstadter's article is that it presupposed that leftists were not conspiracy theory types, a supposition that was about to come under great assault by the Kennedy assassination nutbars and the crazy conspiracy theories that flourished in the antiwar movement of the 1960s: Remember the bit about how LBJ's wife had vast rubber plantations in South Vietnam and that's why we were fighting the North Vietnamese takeover?

Here's the other oddity: the paranoid left largely disappeared from the mid-1970s to around 2000, when they initially coalesced around the Florida recount, then hopped on board the 9-11 Truth bandwagon.

The Trig Truth thing and especially Andrew's involvement in it is really, really strange. It's not something I have ever seen the 9-11 Truthers even mention, although most of them clearly have no love for the GOP. When it's too fringy for the Trooofers, it's way out there.

The Beckian Wing of Conservatism

Hi Rick, saw your post on Beck over here after your comments were closed. I've been taking on the Beck zaniness at my blog as well. Have you been told that you are an Alinsky mole inside the conservative movement yet? I have, and I see Pam Gellar is now claiming that Charles Johnson is an "agent".

I'm also amused that those griping about you "pissing on your own" are those pissing on you. If we can't tell those on our own side when they're getting out of line, how come the commenters and other bloggers felt free to do so in your case? How many of these folks abstained from criticism of John McCain in 2007/2008? Is this really a principle that they believe in, or just a convenient stick?

LIBERAL BLOGGERS ANGRY THAT THEIR BUTT KISSING ISN'T TURNING INTO AD DOLLARS

I think it's fine that they get paid off with advertising dollars. But we'll see how "independent" they can think when they become part of the Democratic money machine.

BTW, does anybody know if Kos or any of the other bloggers gets a "scrape" for fundraising? That's an area where I'd argue that they could and should be making money, just as any professional fundraiser does.
Sorry... forgot to say great post - can't wait to read your next one!

PITTSBURG SHOOTER WAS 'ENCOURAGED' BY CONSERVATIVES?

Well, did I call that one or what?

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09095/960750-53.stm

"Believing most media were covering up important events, Mr. Poplawski turned to a far-right conspiracy Web site run by Alex Jones, a self-described documentarian with roots going back to the extremist militia movement of the early 1990s."

Niewert notes that the shooter's best friend's page recommends Protocols of the Elders of Zion among other books. I'm going to guess that he turns out to have been a fan of "Patriot" radio, like Alex Jones. I don't think Jones qualifies as conservative or liberal; he's out on the paranoid fringe.

I do think that Glenn Beck is problematical (as is Lou Dobbs). Conspiracy kooks are used to being laughed at by the media; if there's somebody out there with a Fox News or CNN soapbox saying there might be something to the FEMA death camps or the North American Union, it could give just enough impetus to somebody already deranged.

THE INCREDIBLY STUPID THOUGHTS OF DEEPAK CHOPRA

Much of his writing seems to be the end product of so many enemas.
